In the case of the Tony Christie clip, it was supplied as an insert reel to ZDF with mute DJ links and VT clock (with Middle Of The Road on the same tape, if I recall) and the BBC have it in this form. Not a whole show (although it would not surprise me in the slightest if it was suddenly discovered that ZDF had a few odd complete TOTP editions in their archive - although further inserts would be more likely if anything, I'd guess).

The BBC should also have a original copy of the full show featuring Tony & Middle of the Road by now as it was recovered back in 2008.

Which edition is that, Paul? I hadn't heard of any January '72 editions being recovered. There are those two semi-domestic b/w reels from late '71, if that's what you mean.

To be clear: it was the January 1972 edition of Disco that it appeared in.

I'd have thought they'd either have sent compilation reels of individual performances or whole shows - and indeed the way the clips tend to come in a little late and leave a little early might suggest the latter. But I don't think either way makes it more likely they kept the tapes. I'd of thought the BBC would of sent whole episodes of TOTP to Germany rather than just 'inserts'. Logically it would of been better to fill the whole reel up rather than just 5 minutes or so. Then ZDF could take want they wanted to use in Disco. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2-inch_Quad_Tape_Reel_with_miniDV_cassette.jpg

Many of the ZDF TOTP clips are inserts only as you can plainly see at the start where they have the time-slates. Although there may be some where they were sent the whole show. A detailed investigation is needed at some point, problem is that ZDF are very cagey with their archives.

Eight years later... Funny thing is, the ZDF version seems to have its own IMDb page, "Slag auf Schlager" (1970): www.imdb.com/title/tt2852396/Like I said in another thread before I noticed this one, for some strange reason the ZDF version seems to have been shown at least once in the UK by the "yesterday" channel. So people who saved that broadcast might be able to offer a comparison.
