Ive noticed that on the new 10cc boxed set Art for art sake is missing from the top of the pops section of the DVD . I'm pretty sure this survives, as im sure I once saw it on TOTP 2, but there is also no sign of it on you tube either. Can anybody confirm that it is in the TOTP archive?

I'm a big 10cc fan but have never seen a TOTP studio performance of this, only the promo. According to the Popscene website they performed it on 04/12/75 & 15/01/76 and neither survives.
I'd be surprised if this exists, but it would obviously be great if it did!

Has this been released yet? A look on Amazon under that title produces nothing. Do you have a link? I'd be interested in a DVD if it's the original line-up!

Just goes to prove how time plays tricks on you. I would have put my house on that surviving. I recall graham gouldman playing a 6 string bass and I wouldnt have known what that was when it was shown originally. Ah well, wrong again!

I distinctly recall the fish-eye effect used for the instrumental break on Art For Art's Sake. I just wonder if John Henshall can shed some light on this as I'm still (as we all are) waiting to find out what else he kept (other than Jean Genie) from his days on TOTP.

They used the fish-eye for "I'm not in love" I'm fairly certain

Yes, that too. My personal recollection is from the actual broadcast at the time & not TOTP2. If nothing comes from John Henshall's collection then there's always home recordings from the UK & on the continent as seen recently with the Elton John 'Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds' youtube posting from Holland.

So it looks as if we can add ART FOR ARTS SAKE to the missing 10cc performance list, along with DONNA, THE DEAN AND I , SILLY LOVE, WALL ST SHUFFLE (All TOTP). JOHNNY DONT DO IT (From lift off) and SILLY LOVE and SACRO ILLIAC (from rock on 45). A very sad state of affairs!!

Thanks for the link, Mike. For some reason, a similar search I did under 10cc produced no results for this one at all! Do you know if the In Concert is complete with beginning / end titles and intros or is it just the songs included separately? I can remember seeing Art For Art's Sake on TOTP myself. I could also swear I've seen it again somewhere more recently though; was a video promo made for the song? If so, maybe I've seen that. The visuals are so clear in my mind though, which makes me think I have seen something for this song! I think it's going to be another one that bothers me in the same way "Stuck In The Middle" did until it turned up!

I'm glad you have stated this Lawrence. Im sure Art for Arts sake was on a steve wright TOTP 2. There was indeed a promo and I think it is on you tube, but i dont think that it was widely shown at the time of release. I'm sure I have seen the top of the pops appearance somewhere else in the not too distant past. I distinctly remember Gouldman playing a six string bass on this appearance, the same one that was used on the later TOTP dreadlock holiday appearance. In 1975, i wouldnt have known what a six string bass was!
