any ideas where i can get hold of the lead in video used in the tv show z-cars as i would like to pass on the info to a local history site thanks.

I think Mike means the opening titles?
If so, there are several versions - the commercial VHS released in 1992 has the original (series 1 only) version, the most common b/w version was on most of the episodes repeated since the 80s.

If i remember correctly they use to change it every time the ford company brought out a new model Ford Zephur IE the 'Z' car in the title

I don't think it was to do with that - there is a new title sequence for series 2, and then series 3, and that sequence lasted more or less unchanged until 1969. There was then a second version of that sequence when colour came in (1970), then another new sequence in 1972 when the theme was also changed (a version of the original tune called the 'Newtown theme'). That sequence was simplified in 1973, and lasted till 1975. The 1976 and 77 series had another new sequence, again very different, with a new theme version credited to 'Steeleye Span Fuzz Music'. The final season in 1978 reverted to the original theme tune, with another new title sequence (made on video).
