The BBC has recently finished a reconstruction exercise to try to piece together many partially-missing episodes of Desert Island Discs. Most of them are without the original music section. www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/blogradio4/posts/desert_island_discs_release_of The main DIDs page seems misleading, since it seems to lump together missing and surviving shows.Anyone found a list of missing episodes? Still no William Hartnell,I think.

They're cleverly managing to avoid for either 'listening' OR 'downloading' purposes anyone who might interest me. They should release for either purpose EVERYTHING they still have and stop pussyfooting around with their own picks.

Quote......
'Of the 43 full episodes we've been able to offer between 1951 and 1975, seventeen are off- air recordings made by radio enthusiasts who have left their recordings to the nation via the British Library Sound Archive. We are grateful to them and to the British Library who offered us programmes from their collection that were missing from the BBC archives.'
crikey does this mean there are only 43 episodes in existance between 1951 and 1975 or is just that they havent uploaded them all yet.

Isn’t it weird (and in fact a crying shame) that up to 1976, not only did they not keep the music, but they cut out the references to the music, so that when doing any reconstruction, they don’t know where to put the music bits in!
Given that there are only 43 episodes in the archive between 1951 and 1975, I’m sure there must be scope on finding some of these on reel to reels.
I must say that I love the idea of having these all accessible online though.
One sour note for me is that the Gary Glitter Desert Island Discs is not on there anymore and it was definitely on there before – comments anyone?

43 Seems awfully low. Maybe most are edited then.

As far as Gary Glitter goes,I understand the problems but given that the BBC was one of the models for the Ministry of Truth,I think we have to be careful about editing people out of history. What next, removing book from libraries when the author is convicted of an awful crime?

The Jimmy Saville DID was removed from the archive,in fact I can't seem to find him listed as a castaway. There's proof that he was on,however: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDbLdsCInSw

Many thanks for that, John. What threw me was that he is listed as an actor instead of a politician. When I did a search, the page I got was different to yours and didn't show his photo (not a bad thing as it's quite a scary photo), so I assumed it was not the right Cyril: www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/desert-island-discs/castaway/3c72c938#p009y9gvIt is interesting that there are two different pages though. Do you happen to know if this is one which was removed or is it a missing one?

No,Mike. It's obvious that they've put a hell of a lot of work into annotating the material, but we do seem to be having a bit of trouble working out how to use it. If something's missing,is it missing because it's missing,or because they haven't put it in?Or because they've taken it out? I'm not 100% sure the fault isn't with us,but I've decided to blame the BBC!
Speaking of Cyril Smith, someone might want to re-write the precis on this show...http://ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/title/498058 Pity they can't do a follow-up to his 'Meet the Press'.

Quick update here, I spoke to a member of the DID team who confirmed Hartnell's is still missing from the archive so a lucky return from a private collector is the only viable source for any such return. Apparently a transcript is available. Does anyone know where I can find it?
