Around 1988 I was in discussion with someone who had worked at an advert archive, possibly based at Bermondsey? It may have been called the advertising archive, but I don't know.
He said they had the 'BACOFOIL' advert from the early 70s - ? Where a fat Chef is trying to wrestle with a large Turkey he can't fit into a piece of foil.
I think this one turned up in the series WASHES WHITER when it was compiled, so researchers must have resourced it.
I was asking after some Cadbury adverts I recalled from around 1970 - 73. He said though the archive normally dealt with agencies, he thought they probably would be agreeable to a one off copy of something for private use.
None of these items appeared in WASHES. It had been stated previously when researchers tried to find a Vesta meals advert from 1971 featuring CORONATION STREET actors; a poor quality copy was all that existed & took some time. Anne Nightingale on one of the WHISTLE TEST retro slots in the 80s stated the David Bowie 1968 'LUV' lolly ad took two years to track down. As far as I know the following ones I was after do not exist. -
1970 ( ? ) (FRYs) CRUNCHIE. - The letters were re designed into a 'Yellow submarine' style typeface. In the advert the letters stood against a white background and were animated to lend each an individual character. The 'C' became a mouth with teeth which turned & bit a chunk out of the 'H'. Above the 'I' was a striped heart shaped dot. This turned into a Butterfly and flew away. Around the same time 'Mint Crunchie' was given a similar psychadelic overhaul with green striped packaging.
1971 - CADBURYS FRUIT & NUT CHOC. - Monty Python style animation. A giant Sergeant Majors face, in peaked hat looms up on screen with darting Gilliamesque eyes. An arm pulls the chocolate bar into view. Different items are seen. The piece was set to a reggae instrumental, possibly 'Liquidator' (Harry J. and the Allstars).
!972 - 73 - CADBURYS - 'NUTS WHOLE HAZELNUTS'. The chocolate bar was publicised by a series of comedy sketches. In each scene, there was a set of characters played by known character actors. Think Julian Orchard (Pettigrew in '71 WHACKO series) may have played a Vicar. Also Jonathan Cecil as a librarian. The one I recall best had an office man dictating a letter to his secretary. As in the others; during his dictation; he sees a bar of chocolate and begins singing the theme tune (NUTS WHOLE H - A - A - A ZEL NUTS). It was in a calypso style. At the end the secretary, who has been typing it all asks 'full stop sir?..'
The comedy drew from the increasingly more pompous characters, middle aged vicars etc. bursting into the song which was followed by hitting an arm on their side going 'OOO!'
These sadly seem to have disappeared. Does anyone know of the various bodies who may hold adverts or of the existance of the aforementioned?
