Hi guys,
I really enjoy Callan having seen existing b/w and colour episodes of this fantastic drama. Does anyone else like Callan and are we in agreement that finding more Edward Woodward is even more unlikely than DW?

Callan and Public Eye: two of the best drama series ever made! I'd really love for there to be some recoveries of lost episodes and it's been extremely disappointing that so little has so far turned up. The ABC Callan era fares much better archivally than Public Eye although I'd welcome any lost episodes of either with open arms. Two of the shows I'd most like to see recovered actually! Anybody got any leads then?!? That Public Eye book is already on my Christmas list as a "must buy"! It's written by Andrew Pixley too, so it'll be thorough and accurate.

I think most people are too bothered with DW to remember about the other programmes. Granted there are only 10 episodes missing which pales into comparison with Z Cars/DW etc., but of course the quality of the first series is dire given the fact that a camera was pointed at a monitor showing the episodes in the wrong format! (405 rather than 625) Despite that very ropey quality, they are still very watchable and remain classics. Just a shame the rest aren't in the archive.

Since I've fallen for a howler over the Cook Report on another thread,it might be as well to mention that the "rare poor-quality" Callan episodes that sometimes get/got listed on ebay are said to be from the DVDs. I posted yesterday that I hoped that these might be potential finds, but apparently not,so I deleted it. Oh,and the Callan movie and the 'Wet Job' special aren't very good.

It's a really exceptional drama series; one of the very best, with no exaggeration whatsoever. It maintained it's quality throughout as well, which is quite unusual. The only downside is that the ABC episodes have been virtually wiped out and if they still existed today would be held in very high regard indeed (along with the Thames run).

I guess that show will appear on my to watch list.
I noticed that with Callan, the quality tended to drop. Are the later ones as good as the earlier ones?

Public Eye? I would say so, yes. Weaker episodes (of which there aren't very many at all) tend to be dotted around randomly. One of the things which kept Public Eye fresh and free from cliche was it's changing format / location throughout. There was also a very strong list of writers, actors and directors that worked on the show over it's entire run. It also used a wide range of subject matter for storylines and you were never sure what the next episode would bring! Central to it all though, of course, is the compelling, subtle and realistic portrayal of Marker by Alfred Burke.
For Callan, I'd say that series 2 was it's absolute peak (with many of the classic premises / storylines being perfected there), with the colour episodes only slightly less strong by comparison. The three parter concluding series four is very good indeed though.

LOVE Callan. Still have the Series 4 to watch but I do prefer the monochrome episodes. Reading this thread has my interest piqued re: Public Eye

This set is Public Eye not Callan obviously! Bet its not remastered which would be like the Callan sets. Callan is apparently being released as a similar set to Public Eye in December 2013 according to Amazon. Which I bet isnt remastered this time either. Now given that the colour series are from studio tapes unlike the monochrome episodes it will be a travesty if they dont bother to clean them up. I for one would get them again if they were. If anyone wants a bargain go to base.com for the Colour Callan. Was a steal on there compared to any other website. £16.99 as opposed to £28 or more elsewhere.

I doubt the PE complete set will be any different to the individual series sets already available. Having said that though, the tapes look generally fine and in much better condition than some of the Callan ones (even the b/w ABC episodes are proper 405 line conversions rather than the smeary optical messes suffered by Callan; the two PE eps which come from t/rs have been VidFired too). I believe series 4 of PE (the excellent Brighton storyline) was restored quite a bit for the original DVD release though as the tapes were apparantly in a bit of a state! For anybody into archive television, it's simply a series you shouldn't be without!
