This is one of the extra's on the Magical Mystery Tour Blur-ray/DVD. Unfortunately the discs don't have any of the colour performance promo's of Hello Goodbye.

Yes i guessed it was on there , i always think it's great to see a clip that was actually shown on TOTPs . I've only ever seen the colour clip in seargant Pepper costumes, so for me seeing this for the first time is magical.

about 15 years ago i met Roy Benson, the editor of MMT and the "hello goodbye" clips. He told me that when they started cutting MMT all 4 Beatles showed up and sat in a row behind him under the impression this would all be wrapped up quite quickly but very soon boredom set in and John Lennon started kicking the back of Roy's chair to amuse himself. One by one they all drifted off leaving Roy to do his thing. He also told me there were 3 clips done for "hello goodbye". I've seen the 2 vers of the Saville theater promo but never understood what he meant by a 3rd version. maybe this was it - even more strange cos Roy himself is in it! He also said something about having "stuff in his garage" but i didn't, unfortunately, follow up on this.

He's right about there being three Hello Goodbye promos, two of which are "performance" clips (one in Sgt. Pepper costumes, one in their normal clothes) and another which is a montage of shots taken at the same shoot (some performance, some messing about). The latter is best identified by John doing an exaggerated version of the twist towards the end. Mark Lewisohn's book does make reference to a further montage promo though, put together under Roy Benson's own steam - maybe this is in his garage? It would be intriguing to see what he has though!
All these promos (and others) should have been officially released long ago though. So where are they, Apple?!?

Apple have copies of pretty much all the promos including both of the 2 Saville Theatre versions.

That edit print featured in the promo with the Beatles' finger marks all over it would probably be worth a fortune now?

Yes, I know they have most of the promos (with the possible exception of the mislaid Penny Lane film - serious slip up, Apple!) but I was asking the question as to why they still aren't out on DVD.

Thanks for pointing us at that, Alan. It's a lovely promo film, in wonderful condition.

It is unfathomable why there isn't a DVD of the promos - given the Beatles "Number One" album has sold 31 million copies and remains the best-selling album of the century (so far) Apple are clearly missing a trick - but then, they have made quite an art form of that!

I am aware there are THREE Savile Theatre versions - basically two separate ones and the edit.
I quite agree on the fact it is unfathomable why no Beatles promo compilation has been released!

It's completely unfathomable how Apple have missed so many tricks! I have mad dreams of the Dr.Who RT taking control of the restoration of the Beatles visual archive for DVD release! ;D
Incidentally, the third Hello Goodbye promo is not really an edit as such as it contains unique material not featured in the other two.

Yes, those stills seem to be mixed up and taken from all three clips. To muddy the water further, it also mentions the fact of an alternate edit being used in the Anthology (making four clips in total or five if you count the Roy Benson montage edit, which no one seems to have seen, save for possibly Mark Lewisohn).
