Just wondering what the story was with this episode. I have variously read that the Montreax version that is the only existing version is either a remake, or the original TV version with new footage added. Which is the case?

Correct me if I'm wrong but...
The story I heard was that this episode was re-edited with addition footage being captured and incorporated (mainly new FX sequences and that of the singing dogs) when this episode was submitted as an entry into the Montreaux film festival.
Apparently - so the story goes - the original film used for this "remount" was that which was used for the episodes original broadcast in 1971 - thus, technically speaking, the "original broadcast version" of this episode no longer exists.
As far as I am aware there is no "lost" material from this episode - it was simply re-edited.
Hope this helps.

That's what I thought - although I have seen the later version referred to as a 'remake', although it does seem unlikely that they would reshoot the episode from scratch.

No, all the studio sections were remade - it was just some of the film footage that was re-used from the original. Plus, I think, the ending was slightly different. Andrew Pixley wrote a very good article on the differences - I'll see if I can dig it out.

Hmmm... interesting...
Yeah, that'd be great if you could find the article - it would be interesting to know the full story.

I'd have happily placed the text here ... but clearly it's too long to be posted. So, you can find a full description of the 1971 version here with those awfully nice "Clarion & Globe" people: www.goodiesruleok.com/newsletter.php?issue=61All the best Andrew

Awesome... Thanks for that Andrew - I must sit down and read it one day when my schedule is not quite so hectic...
