It's sad, isn't it? Seems like a completely petty act with no strategic sense.

Yes.
And I read that (well, at least before the Talibans) Afghanistan had an expanding film industry. To think a lot of them are gone...

Yup. The Talibans banned television because they considered it immoral.

Yup. The Talibans banned television because they considered it immoral. That and graven images of man are susposed to be banned in Islam.

Hmmm... Some cultures used to believe that the act of taking photographs was stealing someone's soul...

Burning Tv prints for religious purposes will never contend with burning people for religious purposes. In this regard the British are streets ahead of the Taliban.

I think you'll find that just about every culture in the world has been guilty of mass murder for reasons of religion - despite the fact that most religions profess to be about love, respect, compassion etc...

Indeed. The thing was merely my extreme annoyance with the usual western demonisation of the Taliban, based entirely on George Bush The Younger's baseless claims of Taliban involvement in the WTC. With regards to the Afghan archives, yes it is a tragedy, but at least they thought they were doing God's work, and not merely using the prints to fill potholes in Dunny-on-the-Wold.

Actually, I think the demonisation was based on impartial journalists smuggling out footage of regular Taliban atrocities against, amongst others, young children and unarmed civilians and not for so simplistic a reason as believing anything that halfwit Bush said. Oh, where do I begin? First off, the media was reporting on the Taliban's attrocities TEXTbefore TEXT Duh-bya decided to run for office. Trust me, the US media isn't that keen of Bush, unless you're counting Fox News (run by his couisn Roger Ailes). Which media are you basing your claims on, by the way? The conspiracy theorists that appear on Art Bell and George Norey 's (sp) radio shows? Is this what the BBC is reporting as fact? Mabye Bill O'Reiley is right about the Beeb after all. And who do you think crashed those planes into the WTC then?
