Now, this archive seems to be....AWOL online.
Border's local news and regional shows actually covered 4 'euro regions', almost five in fact....
For those of you not familiar with the region....Border covered the vast majority of Cumbria, Dumfries and Galloway, the Scottish Borders, the ISle of Man and tiny tracts of Northumberland (Berwick Upon Tweed and some surrounding villages, plus the hamlets around Alston that aren't actually in Cumbria....Slaggyford and Halton lea Gate if memory serves, but I could be wrong) and also part of historic Yorkshire (the Sedbergh and Garsdale/Dent area)
So far so good. Now, this is the intriguing bit. The film archive was meant to have been shifted to the University of Cumbria (the campus in Carlisle, just north of the river, former CIA - that is Cumbria Institute of the Arts building), but all has gone quiet.
That concerns me on its' own, but also....as you may or may not know, regional footage often gets shifted about. So would the footage concerning Southern Scotland go to STV or the Scottish Film Archive? Likewise the Manx footage to their archive, and where will Border's Cumbrian footage end up?
The Regional footage divisioning of Great Britain is not an exact science (MACE have film of Gloucestershire, for example, but technically, that's the South West....but it's ex-Atv which explains why it is there....there are numerous other examples I can bore you with, but I won't unless you really want me to....)
My point is, while Border may have produced less programmes than all ITV companies on an annual basis (with the exception of Channel....that's another story I will return to at some point....where are all the Channel programmes....I mean News in French was shown on a daily basis....Puffin's Plaice, was that another?....I did used to read TV listings in the newspaper a lot as a kid....mud sticks!), even if they produced 2 shows a month for the network, that' still potentially a lot of programmes....and that's ignoring all the Regional News and Weather and Lookarounds (Deekaboot to any Cumbrian readers,....)
A number of Border clips (mainly news items) were on youtube for a bit, but the poster (BORDERFILMARCHIVE) is no longer contactable.
This is another film archive worth tracking down....Border wasn't just Mr and Mrs.
(Did Derek Batey have the first perma-tan on TV, years before David Dickinson or Robert Kilroy-Silk?)
Apologies for waffling. I am sleepwalking my way through this post!
