Has anyone noticed how "Grainy" the picture is on the re-runs of Upstairs Downstairs being shown on UK Gold at the moment?
Is that due to the quality of the tape the programme was recorded on or poor storage of the tapes?

Has anyone noticed how "Grainy" the picture is on the re-runs of Upstairs Downstairs being shown on UK Gold at the moment? Is that due to the quality of the tape the programme was recorded on or poor storage of the tapes? It's the quality of LWT's digital masters of it. Stephen La Riviere (who posts here) spoke to the archivist about this and the modern D2 archive copies were made from whatever source (not necessarily the original quads) seemed in the best nick. The original quads had been played a lot and had lots of dropout and scratches, and it seems in some cases multi-generational 1" copies (for example) were deemed preferable. I gather in a couple of cases with this series, quads that had been returned from Australia and subsequently archived were in better condition than LWT's own tapes! Steve
