TV Brain says Doctor Who The Deadly Assassin 13.11.1976 Episode 3 The only known copy was recorded on a domestic video format (e.g. VHS, Beta, Phillips 1500) The BFI holds this episode on 2-Inch Quadruplex - Video-TX Date: 1976-11-13 C-779011 Am I right in thinking that 2-Inch Quadruplex is either the original format or at least a significant up grade on the current domestic video format above. Is this already known about? or would someone like to investigate this further and let us know the outcome please? For clarification, only a few seconds of the episode were ever missing. Mary Whitehouse complained about the cliffhanger where the Doctor is held underwater and is about to drown. It was edited in response with a short section cut out and lost. THese few seconds are the only part that had to be restored from domestic video. I can't say if the BFI holding is the unedited version. I wouldn't bet on it.

I seem to remember from the old restoration team forum that the original transmission tape had the alteration made to it by rerecording the ending over the original one, so I would say there is little or no hope.

A similar thing was supposedly done to an episode of I, Claudius to make it less gory, but an off-air tape hasn't turned up.

Regarding I, Claudius: Based on some eye witness accounts I now suspect that the edit done after its premiere was only to make the previous cut a bit smoother. However, this is not certain. And who knows, there might accidentally still be one frame left of the deleted shot. So a 1976 off-air could still be useful.

How ironic that it should be one without Raymond Francis.

The Widower 10/8/61 is on You Tube at the moment (looks like somebody transferred it with an old projector and camera, but grateful they took the trouble so that we could see it). It is perhaps not representative of how the series evolved over the following years as the budgets got bigger and the plots more daring. Smokey 26/4/65 is known to have survived Ask me if I killed her 11/5/66 is known to have survived. There are definitely a couple of others knocking around some or all not complete or extracts.

Yet only one episode of Crime Sheet is known to exist, unless someone else has news about any others?

I was more referring to Murder Bag itself rather than the later No Hiding Place, of which there are a few still around - very few considering the large number of episodes made over a long period.
