Does anyone know the status of this show from the late 50's/early 60's? I have a well-known singer who has enquired about her TOTP appearances (some being wiped) and also one on this show when she was very young.

Only one edition is supposed to exist, Ray (featured as an extra on one of the Network Crossroads DVD sets). Another has been rumoured to exist for years although nothing has surfaced as yet. It was a live programme and so they might not have all been recorded in the first place although some other regions staggered transmission (?) which might mean it was t/r'd for this very reason for parts of it's life. Someone else will probably be able to shed more light on it's regional screenings though.

Thank you Laurence.
Connected but o/t, the lady in question seems to have 4/7 of her TOTP existing, but not the one she's after.

There were lots of 'inserts' as they did a lot of pre-recorded segments such as the coal mining/lifeboat training/train driving stuff with Noele. Whether it's all at MACE or not I guess time will tell.
There were a fair few clips used of Lunchbox by ITN in her death report including one of her being 'mobbed' by a huge crowd So they should at least remain with ITN.

Here at MACE we do indeed have some Luchbox inserts although I suspect not as many as originally existed. We have mute film inserts of Noele learning to scuba dive; going down a mine; visiting the army in Cyprus; and at a toy shop for the Christmas 1960 programme. Film also exists of Lunchbox outside broadcasts not sure if this was shot for Lunchbox itself or for Midlands News.
Not seen any lifeboat training or train driving films though. The only telerecording I have ever heard of is the one that ITV hold that was released by Network.
We did recently discover some 8mm home movie of Noele at Ripley in Derbyshire for a Lunchbox outside broadcast from the railway station!

Noele also had commissioned herself footage (1973) of her at ATV and also at the Palladium, but she kept it in her home and its currently wayward.
I don't know if Phil can shed any light on the Format V: Nolly film footage. I keep hearing that its been kept and others say it can't be found in MACE.
This was the original film intro to the 1978 Format V: Nolly which was lopped off for Wendy Jones to do her 'tribute' on the 1985 Central repeat.
The original opening showed Noele in Birmingham with fans and in the shops then driving up into the ATV Centre in the roller. When we were last at Lenton Lane I know it was still around in its original rushes form which had more than was broadcast, but it doesn't appear to be logged on any database. Rather like all those Central Film Library inserts of Crossroads from Spain/Tunisia ect that they discovered along with the 1965 Episode a few years ago.
Anyway, brilliant to hear that MACE has some surviving inserts of Lunchbox, it was such a pioneering show that it certainly deserves to be archived in some form for Midland heritage to one day appreciate just what was going on in Birmingham in the early days of ITV.

Crossroads does seem particularly prone to items going missing. Have all those inserts since disappeared then, Mike? I remember Greg Taylor reporting about them being uncovered a few years ago and I had high hopes of seeing some eventually (possibly as extras on a Network DVD set), as I can recall watching the Tunisia storyline on original transmission. Hopefully they are safe somewhere?

They were not at MACE - I've never understood why Crossroads (the original series) isn't in the regional archive as it was never a networked programme. Its I suspect the most successful 'regional' production there has been on the ITV network as right until 1988 it was made for the Central region and other ITV broadcasters bought it and showed it at their own times, but that's another issue.
From what I recall Greg saying these inserts were found at the ITV London film archives in Perivale, but were part of the 'Central Film Library'. I assume as they're just inserts they're not top of the list to log and order. It would be nice to see some of the Paris clips in that lot, there is a brilliant colour photo of Roger Tonge outside the Moulin Rouge club which they filmed in. Paris and ATV doesn't have much luck I don't think the Emergency Ward 10 episodes recorded there are around either? Richard Thorp does however have photographs of those.

I'm sure the episode that exists has Noel mentioning that they are being telerecorded that day so it would seem to be the first time and that it wouldn't be a regular occurrence.

If you could avoid using the phrases "Noele Gordon" and "Lunch Box" in the same sentence in future, that would be appreciated. "Shiver".

Its been on You Tube for many years.I lived in the London region as a boy & this show would get shown occasionally. Even then I thought the songs were old fashioned but I liked the banter between Noele & the band.

The recent ITVX documentary about Noele Gordon accompanying their drama 'Nolly' (which I can highly recommend) contained some sequences of Noele from Lunch Box I hadn't seen before, including of her launching a biplane and riding around Birmingham on an elephant! Were these sourced from the MACE collection of film inserts or are they new discoveries?
