Some relevant info from a previous thread : missingepisodes.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=totp&thread=5775&page=3#56382and someone who worked on the show comments : From: Ivor Allison Sent: 21 September 2010 To: ctva@hotmail.co.uk As far as I know, having been a student of ATV and UK ITV all my life and a professional cameraman of 35 years, and having worked at what is now BBC TV Elstree - ALL absolutely ALL "This is TOM JONES" were recorded at ATV Elstree studio D - the audience studio in both 625 line PAL and for the USA 525 line NTSC . If you look all the directors are ATV staffers of the time - Jon Schofield ,etc. Having actually worked in that studio the shows were recorded once in 625 and then again in 525 - colour conversion to enable a single 525 line recording did not exist - for the record the cameras were the excellent Philips PC 60;s' [Ivor Allison]

hey Tim.
keep up the good work as there is still a few notables of TITJ missing.
Arthur Brown would be a good find as it may contain the only contemporary colour performance of 'Fire'
The Who also appears to only survive on B/W TR.
I believe TJ did a couple of shows later in the States? but they obviously had no idea what PAL was, so for transmission in the UK we had to make do with colour film TRs- this is how/why the great Janis Joplin session survives.
If they were not using film AFAIK ATV's 525- 625 conversions prior to around 1972 could only be done as video (as opposed to film) telerecordings, these looked ghastly with ghostly lag and sound pitch differences. So that is why it was preferable to use dual sets of cameras on quality productions The BBC had devised a 525-625 solid state converter in the late 1960s but this would take its time to get to ITV

The Who also appears to only survive on B/W TR. I've a copy that is on b/w VT, in addition to the t/r version.

I'm sure I saw The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown performing Fire on one of those adverts for Time Life 60's cd box sets in the 90's it came from TITJ so good chance it still exists!, I thought at the time it was unusual to see something different than TOTP or Beat Club for this song

Yes, i've seen that one myself. Not sure if it's from TITJ though or another period show (I believe there is a colour performance of the song existing in something else from about 1970 / 71 but can't recall what just now!).

Yes, I knew about that but i've a feeling there's another one nearer to the time of the original hit. Might have been an LWT programme (?). Just a guess but that's as specific as I can get right now.

Could it have been that Tony Blackburn series? that I cant recall right now, was also produced by Mike Mainsfield.

Southern Tv Time For Blackburn Peter , according to the imdb website it states . To compliment the edition with Arthur Brown singing Fire, at the beginning of the show the station identity caption was also set alight. Does anyone know if this clip is still around , not much of this show survives.

Its a shame nobody ever asks the amiable and chatty Tony Blackburn about this as I am sure he would have a few anecdotes to tell, especially with a producer like MM.
