Mike, the beat club footage is definately peter whitehead footage so maybe this is the one. Just on the beach boys promos, the very early ones on totp were usually stills montages up to sloop john b which was the swimming pool footage. God Only Knows was the campfire in the woods with them wearing zombie masks. Good Vibes was the whitehouse footage. Heros and Villians was film in black and white of surfers ( i last saw this in 77 but it had the good vibrations track over it rather than heros) not a clue what then i kissed her was and neither has my sister who recalls most of their appearances. Darlin was footage of the guys arriving at heathrow in 67 . Do it again was the guys arriving at a beach in a camper truck and larking around. but they actually appeared on totp christmas 68 in the studio. Other than that i think that a promo for Cottofields was filmed in the uk on a construction site one cold and windy night. not very californian!!

Gary, that 'Cottonfields' promo sounds very much like one of the Music Unlimited promos. There are two later promo's for 'You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone' and 'Don't Go Near The Water' from 1972 I believe, on the 'Sensational Sounds Of The 70's' DVD sets.

yes Mike , I think they are from a tv show. no doubt somebody will be able to put me right here, but I think they were from a Dave Cash show. To be honest there is not that many of their tv appearances missing . Thank your lucky stars and beat room aside. most of the american appearances survive but even when they were in the uk in 66 and 67 they had a bad habit of backing out of tv appearances due to fee disputes (rsg in 66 and billy cotton bandshow 66) . the one that i would really love to see is from 1970 on the David Frost show singing vegitables and dennis wilsons Lady. cant figure out if this one is out there but the audio survives as well as some stills.

Presumably you remember watching these on TOTP at the time, Gary? As even the PasBs at Caversham do not give that kind of content detail.

To be honest Laurence, I dont remember any of them , I was way to young but my sister who was 13 years my senior was a beach boys nut , not only beach boys but anything top 40, beatles hollies yardbirds etc. She kept masses of old scrap books with stuff out off nme, tv times etc and this together with her photographic memory helped me when i started to get into the beach boys. Just to give you an example, when news came through in the seventies that the beach boys appearances on ready steady go had come to light, it was originally stated that dance, dance, dance was one of the tracks found. upon telling my sister this she looked at me and said "thats funny they didnt do dance dance dance!!??" and sure enough!!!!!

As promised - here's the word on Good Vibrations from my mate Keith Badman:-
""The 'Good Vibrations' promo film (shot by Peter Whitehead during The Beach Boys' UK Tour and screened on TOTP during the editions broadcast on November 10 and 17, 1966 editions) was sent to Germany for an airing on Beat Club (episode 15) on December 31 that year. It gives us even further proof that the BBC was sending TOTP clips abroad at the time at an incredible rate. (ie., I have it on good authority that the TOTP promo clip for Dave Dee, Dozy, etc. etc.'s 'Legend Of Xanadu' was sent to/ and screened on Australian TV in 1968 and was repeated as recently as the 1980s.) ""

Now if we could only find the BBC documentation as to what was sent out that would be a goldmine of information

I think it's either 29/02/1968 or 07/03/1968, Alan. An educated guess!

Just wondering: the promo of the Beach Boys in the fire station circa "Smile" period - was that actually shot for the "Fire" segment of "Smile" or something else? It is often used for that piece of music (and fits quite well)

Simon, I think I recall seeing an article in record mirror from around that time . Beach Boy Alan Jardine quoted that the firemen piece was filmed for the fire piece of smile, In all the hours of beach boys footage I have seen, to this day I have never seen footage of good vibrations shot at the time of release in a tv studio, striped shirts en alL. If only they hadnt cancelled the ready steady go!appearance. But then again the footage still wouldnt exist! Maybe there is some out there, they did the song on a tv show in france in 66.

The Fireman piece was an early example of an Official record label promo film - even EMI (sister company to Capitol) never paid for any of the Beatles' promos!
