Isn't it the case that a fair number of the season one episodes went out "live" and weren't telerecorded? If that's the case then - at the risk of stating the obvious - there is no chance of anything surviving... IN THE FIRST SEASON RUN OF THE SHOW THERE WAS NINE LIVE EPISODES OUT OF THE 26 EPISODES. NO 3 SQUARE ROOT OF EVIL SAT 21 JAN NO 4 NIGHTMARE SAT 28 JAN NO 5 CRESCENT MOON SAT 04 FEB NO 6 GIRL ON THE TRAPEZE 11 FEB NO 7 DIAMOND CUT DIAMOND 18 FEB NO 8 THE RADIOACTIVE MAN 25 FEB NO 9 ASHES OF ROSES 04 MARCH ALL THE LIVE EPISODES HAVE VT NUMBERS AND THE REST OF THE EPISODES HAVE VT NUMBERS TOO. LONDON AND SOME MORE REGIONS WHO DID NOT PICK UP THE 1961 SEASON FROM THE START THERE WAS A PLAN TO HAVE A REPEAT RUN OF THE NINE EPISODES THAT DID NOT GET A RUN IN THE FIRST PLACE IN 1961 BUT IT DID NOT GO A HEAD BUT IF IT DID THE NINE EPISODES THEY WAS GOING TO SHOW IN THE REPEAT RUN WAS NO 10 HUNT THE MEN DOWN NO 6 GIRL ON THE TRAPEZE NO 5 CRESCENT MOON NO 3 SQUAQE ROOT OF EVIL NO 7 DIAMOND CUT DIAMOND NO 8 THE RADIOAOTIVE MAN NO 11 PLEASE DON'T FEED THE ANIMALS NO 9 ASHES OF ROSES NO 4 NIGHTMARE SO SEVEN OF THE NINE LIVE EPISODES WAS PLAN TO BEEN REPEAT IN 1962 SO I HOPE THAT HELPS.

Im just curious. Were there british Avengers fanzines in the 60s where it might be possible to get leads of people who might have audio recorded them?

HI ANDY WITH YOUR NEWS THERE IS SOME NEW HOPE WITH FINDS FOR ABC SHOWS. IF I CAN ASK WHAT KIND OF SHOW IS OVERSEAS PRESS CLUB DO YOU HAVE ANY INFO ON IT AND WHEN DID THEY FIND THE EPISODES. ALL THE BEST. NOEL A filmed series of half hour episodes consisting of adventure stories (stated as true stories by a particular reporter). Made in 1957 and found within the past year. With reference to another post contributor on this thread, it should be mentioned that because a programme went out live it does not mean that the programme was not recorded. Yours,

Good point-though it threw me for a moment.I suspect that tonight's 10 o'clock news was live, but I could have taped it! The point of course is that a recording would have been made at the time of broadcast by ABC or whoever, rather than prior-to.

Im curious how the ratings or popularity were the first season of Avengers.
While it may not mean much, it may help give a hint as to wheather the lack of audios is due to lack of persevation or lack of recordings made.

While it may not mean much, it may help give a hint as to wheather the lack of audios is due to lack of persevation or lack of recordings made. Series 1 and 2 didn't make the top 20. The Avengers didn't appear in the ratings until October 1963 when it got to number 11. That would be S03E03 "The Nutshell" which reached 6.0 homes. ~iw

I was thinking it might have not been networked fully at first.
IIRC about the same time The Saint took a couple of years to get a networked slot.

I see in the opening post that there's a reference to regions that seem never to have shown the earliest episodes,at least,of the first season. With any viewing figures I always feel it's fairest to see what the competition was: anyone know what was on the BBC when the Avengers was on? (at whatever times?).

Did The Avengers ever go out live? It's odd that some programmes such as Coronation Street were taped from the earliest days yet other dramas were apparently still being performed live in the 1970's.
I have this memory of watching a drama on ITV in the afternoon and halfway through someone held up a piece of paper in front of the camera. That was the end of the programme and the beginning of a strike. I wonder if it was the series "Kate"? Does anyone else have any memory or info about this? I may have some of the details wrong.

This is wildly off-topic but I was watching Two's Company on TV when Eileen Stritch ,half way through a scene, stopped and said something to the director along the lines of "I'm sorry,Mr.X,I thought we were going to try it another way from that line?" I figured it was a wrongly-spliced tape with the wrong take.Wonder if it still exists? To reiterate, people walking along the street are live, but can always be recorded while their doing it.Coronation Street episodes are in the archives, but I'm pretty sure they, too were performed live in the early days.In theory,if the earliest stories of Ena and Co. were in a salt mine in Utah, everyone would be saying there was no chance of their ever turning up because they were broadcast live. I've learnt all this in the past few weeks,of course.

I remember reading that in the early days 2 Coronation Street episodes were performed back to back.
One was shown live (& recorded I guess), & the other recorded for screening on another day.

Thats interesting that the first two seasons werent high in the ratings.. That could explain why they arent around. When it started to take off during the 3rd season, perhaps they took the two honor blackman seasons and saw them valuable, but didnt recognize the importance of the Ian Hendry year. Still, from what Ive seen of the pilot and the other two, it really is pretty good.
I guess thats something that separates it from Dr Who. Once the daleks showed up, the ratings and popularity increased. Was Dr Who in the top 20?
While it didnt get high in the ratings, did it have a fan base at the beginning? Just curious.

With any viewing figures I always feel it's fairest to see what the competition was: anyone know what was on the BBC when the Avengers was on? (at whatever times?). That's a very interesting question! In truth from its inception, ITV had no competition from the BBC for TV audiences at this time. From 1955 through to 1960 the only BBC programmes that make the ratings are Party Political Broadcasts and even then they share the position with ITV. Late 1961 is when BBC programmes start making it into the charts. November 1961 they had three: Miss World being the highest at number 9 ( Doctor Kildare and Overland Trail at 15 & 19). Through 1962 and 1963 the most number of programmes the BBC get into the top 20 is five and there are still many months with no BBC presence at all. It isn't until January 1964 that Steptoe & Son gives them their first number 1 position. The BBC didn't really become a serious ratings contender until the 1980's. ~iw
