Granada has often contributed to Children In Need, particularly with the cast of Coronation Street, and I expect Red Nose Day is no different? Granada TV's contribution to Red Nose Day? Why was an ITV company involved in Red Nose Day, which has always been shown on the BBC, and has been always a network event, with no regional variations. Very true, Granada and the other ITV stations have contributed to Red Nose Day over the years, but it was always a part of the network coverage on the BBC. It is entirely possible that a fact checker didn't go through the book well enough, or it is possible that they were slated to perform on the ITV Telethon in 1992 , which did have regional coverage, but never got broadcast.

The reference to the "Granada Festival" to my mind would refer to the Manchester International Festival, from which Granada used to broadcast a number of programmes each year, under the name of "Festival!". I'm assuming it would most likely to be that. I'm certain it wouldn't be Red Nose Day, especially in 1993 when it was 100% comedy without the light entertainment trappings of recent years.

The fact is that Oasis were only known in Manchester in early 1993, they weren't even signed until May 1993, so it does seem highly implausable that they would appear on any TV programme, let alone a BBC one as early as that.
But I would like to be proved wrong though!

I wondered about this too. I thought it was more likely to be Granada's annual "Celebration" arts strand. Some unknowns that later weren't, and many unknowns that would remain unknown, would have appeared on it.

But Manchester International Festival has only existed since 2007. Unless you mean something else? I do, and a bit of Googling suggests I mean the Boddingtons Manchester Festival, which according to this - www.rhodesalumni.co.uk/alumni-accolades/#wbc - ran from 1991 to 1993. Indeed I remember the coverage of the 1993 event was based around the announcement of the success of Manchester's Olympic bid. Granada used to run various programmes from the event under the "Festival!" banner locally - I remember recording a stand-up compilation, presumably from the last one, presented by Mark and Lard and I'm assuming there was probably a compilation of new bands at some point as well.

Apologies for bumping this really old thread! Still trying to find out what show Oasis recorded their first (untransmitted) TV appearance for, and if a recording exists anywhere.
I recently re-read Paolo Hewitt's book "Getting High: The Adventures of Oasis" and on page 175 he mentions that on 22nd June 1992 Oasis played the Playback Roadshow. No mention of this being a TV programme but it sounds like it could be one to me. The other details given by Hewitt correspond well with the information given in Tony McCarroll's book (see above) other than the claim that it was for Red Nose Day. Here's some more info from Hewitt's book...
"The Playback Roadshow was an event that formed part of a nationwide drive to raise money for various charities. Martin, Bonehead's brother, knew the festival organiser and persuaded him to let Oasis play the day-long festival, which also featured acts such as Opus 3 and the Utah Saints. After performing, Oasis handed over a tape to be auctioned of Take Me, featuring two mixes. They also autographed the cassette cover." (Hewitt, page 176).
Anyone remember this? Would be great to get some more details on the event, which might help in finding a recording of Oasis's performance (which is currently thought to be lost). Thanks for reading and for any help on this.

ok I was dunk and young but I saw oasis in Nov 1993 I recall during the set that noel said that they'd 'just been on tv doing that red nose day' so that would point to March 1993 appearance? theres lots of genuine errors in the books on oasis [and why not a lot happened very quickly] I never kick myself over this but I decided not to record any of their performances sessions etc as TBH there was too much hype so decided to take a stand!

Thanks very much for your reply, it's much appreciated. Out of interest whereabouts did you see them perform? There are many live Oasis bootleg recordings out there so maybe this could help pin things down regarding the Red Nose Day reference. Seems odd that they would've performed Take Me on TV by March 93 though, as around this time they had recorded demos of most of the songs featured on their debut album. Yes, some the books on Oasis are quite variable in their accuracy but I have found Paolo Hewitt and Paul Mathur's to be excellent. Unfortunately they don't give detail on this early TV performance. I will see if I can follow up the possibility that they performed for RND 93. Thanks again.

Just checked and on 28th November 1993 Oasis played at The Leadmill, Sheffield, supporting CNN. And Children in Need that year was 26th - 27th November, which would make sense of Noel's claim that they had 'just been on TV doing that Red Nose Day'. Seems like he mixed up RND and CIN. If this is right then the next question is what might have happened to the footage...

it was nov 1993 saw them in derby & sheffield IIRC they supported shed7 on that tour. NO it was bmx bandits in 93 sheds in 1994!
nov 1st oasis in derby nov 28th oasis in sheffield saw them in 1994 in may in derby think THIS could be the noel quote or was it at the leadmill, I can't remember!
meant to add that they were very much a support band on that tour [93] - can't see how they would have been on national tv. think a local opt-in-out of CIN is best guess? Oddly I think Peter Kay will be your best person to ask - he recorded lots of granada output and NW television,.

TV Ark has a very short clip of BBC Manchester's CiN coverage from 1993, plus some stills. www2.tv-ark.org.uk/childreninneed/No sign of Alvin Stardust there, but there is an early appearance by Richard Hammond.
