I'm only posting this on here as I know Hancock's TV oeuvre is obviously a hot topic. I wasn't aware that Hancock's film "The Punch and Judy Man" had any cuts - and yet I have been proved wrong. I have asked the BBFC for a list of edits- although looking at the sequence, I imagine it was cut to bring it down to a "U" certificate. It's a revealing sequence, and apparently came to light when C4 broadcast it during the 1980s. Thankfully someone had the temerity to record it and isolate the missing footage for us all to see. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc-Vd5ivy-4Regards Simon Wells

Thanks for posting the link - I seem to remember Hancock re-wrote the scene where he stuffs the flowers into the pig as he didn't consider it strong enough. Originally the script described the flowers going into it's mouth but Hancock said, "It's not strong enough, it's got to go up it's arse."

Yes- there was some debate on another forum was that the cut was to squeeze the film onto a 2-for 1 DVD-Video. I sort of doubt that. I have asked the BBFC to provide me with a list of cuts- which I shall post later if there's some interest.

This was flagged up in a review or two on the Amazon reviews from 2008 on.I was miffed when I read it.The view is that it is due to the BBFC.

On a topical note, both Blackadder's Christmas Carol and the Muppet Christmas Carol were cut for DVD. Blackadder lost a line about Jesus' birth, the Muppet movie lost a song.I know the latter was on the video release, not sure about the Blackadder. Was the Hancock scene on video? I watched it recently but was a bit too bored to check.

I believe the "missing" song in Muppet CC was never actually in the cinema version, but was added in for the VHS. Unfortunately it was then taken out again for the R2 DVD, although the original 4:3 R1 DVD has it.

I see that one or two reviewers on IMDB say that the song was in the theatrical MCC,and one states that the director wanted it included.I suppose it's just possible they saw an early cut? Then again,IMDB lists the VHS running time as longer than the cinema screening. Anyway, the anniversary reissue has the song in (full-screen version) and out (widescreen). I hope no-one's implying that Miss Piggy was in any way involved in the Punch and Judy Man scene in the original post?

Correct: the song was added for the first home-video releases of MCC; it was never in the theatrical cut. It's still present in the pan/scan DVD releases, but is missing from the widescreen discs and TV showings as Disney no longer have the film elements. The only widescreen copy of which I'm aware is in the (letterboxed) NTSC laserdisc release from the mid-90s.

"Disney no longer have the film elements"? Strangely lax of them - can you point me to info about this? I always understood that the song was in the international version of the film, but not the US version. It's usually in the UK TV versions, whatever, and last seen by me on Five a few years ago, and on Film Four I believe a few days ago!

Hmmm...not easily, it turns out :-( The whole thing came up six years ago when the first widescreen DVD release of the film occurred. The information, IIRC, was posted to the Muppet Central forums, possibly in the form of a letter from Disney in reply to someone asking about the 'cut', but unfortunately I now cannot find the post.
In terms of the UK TV showings...nope, the Five showing doesn't have it - I know, cos I recorded the film in the hope of getting that scene! Interestingly, at the point where the song goes, Five's copy of the film contains a brief shot which is not present in any other copy that I know of.
I recorded C4's showing on Christmas Eve this year, but unfortunately my PVR has just died so I haven't seen the recording and I'm not sure whether I'll be able to get anything off it now. That said, the tx slot wasn't really long enough to accommodate the extended film plus adverts.

Ok, I've managed to read the disc now, and the C4 showing definitely does not include the song. I didn't record the FilmFour showing, but it doesn't seem likely they'd have had anything different.

You're right about the 4 and 5 showings - think I was misremembering watching the found VHS just after... And yes, I seem to remember the furore on the Muppets Central site, so thanks for that. I'll go in search

A brief shot of Scrooge and Belle, IIRC. I didn't keep it.

I do seem to remember that, Alex - I was DVDr'ing at the time and thought "Oh good, it's... oh, it isn't". Wasn't it the long shot of them on the bridge at the end of the song, or am I lost in my own dream sequence...?
