Ah yes, that makes sense having read the piece below!! Might have known he wasn't quite the Dr Who expert with the comment about the titles indicating Hartnell. Oh. My God, what have I become? ?

Just to chip in with my "what the papers said" hat on, the find seems to have gained coverage in quite a few national newspapers today; The Times and The Sun to name but two, covering a pretty wide demographic. The articles in both mentioned that over 100 episodes are still being sought, so it has generated its own publicity for the lost episodes in many places where it will be seen.

"Hey Grandad, did you see about those Dr Who episodes being found? Didn't you have 6 reels of film called "The Power of the Daleks?" etc etc. Of course publicity is pointless if these two recently returned were the last two out there A frustrating element of the find... we are still no closer, and never will be, to knowing if there's nothing there. Unless Paul got handed another couple last week and isn't going to tell anyone before the next MBW! Oh and I've just noticed that someone has what must be the highly pleasurable task of changing the status of Airlock and The Underwater Menace 2 from MISSING to EXISTS on the missing-episodes.com list...

What a total shock! One find is enough to show us that there very well may be more... But two in one go? Fantastic! When will the next find be, I wonder?

This discovery does give creedence to the fact that there are possibly no more episodes to find down here in Australia The trail had probably been followed on these two prints already to the point where it was established that these two prints were sent down here for viewing by Aussie audiences, and then (possibly) bicycled half way round the world, eventually made thier way back to the BBC and were then "junked" as the master negs possibly were still available at that time. If anything it stokes the flame that more material (not just who) has found it's way into private collections this way! We live in hope!!

Apart from the publicity that might be generated by the find (which could potentially cause someone else to come forward), I don't really think that one find has any relevance whatsoever on the likelihood any other find.

[/quote] True, There has been little or no publicity down here (not that I've noticed) I only found out because of this forum!! I have posted the news on my FB page and also mentioned this site, hopefully it jogs a memory or two- fingers crossed!! Oh, I meant "possibility" not "fact"

I actually think that if there are prints in private collections - Australia and New Zealand would be the most likely places (besides the UK).. That's not to say it's all that likely that there is anything, but those were the countries that had the most prints sent, and therefore the most likelihood of something surviving.
I found about a dozen missing episodes (of other things - not Dr. Who) in Australia over the years, so there was definitely material down there at some point...
I've spoken to a number of film collectors over there, and so far I only know of three people there with any Dr. Who prints, and none of them are missing...

I figured that's what you meant - just couldn't resist... But of course, we always have had the oldest surviving episode (it just doesn't happen to be the same one it was before this one was found) .... :-) Well, if we're trying to out-pedant each other...! Actually, we have only ever had the oldest episode that we knew about! The oldest surviving episode may yet be waiting to be found! ;D That's true. Richard Bignell will now have to retitle his work 'Nothing at the End of this Lane... except for Galaxy 4 Episode 3, oh, and Underwater Menace 2 and... so on...'

Also wish to add my congrats. I'm just amazed they were originally bought by the collector back in the 80s'. How come they were left idling for SO many years? I understand how things like transactions and copyright take a long time to sort, but really... Still, the Galaxy 4 is a real, left-field surprise. And we now have the oldest Troughton episode. Lovely. The film collector didn't know that the episodes were missing from the BBC archive. Thank goodness he didn't throw them away. It certainly is a happy coincidence that it was a television engineer and a fan of the show who just happened to stumble across the prints at a school fete!!! Lucky they weren't stashed away in the basement of a church!

Can someone remind me on which DVD the longer (previously existing) extract from "Galaxy 4" is? Looked on the Lost in Time set but couldn't see it there.
