And how did it end up on something like Callan? Does that mean it's an off-air recording?

No, ITV always put the cue dots on their pre-recorded programmes. You'll find it on most of their old programmes, including the t/r copies too. The BBC seems to have added them on transmission though.

Thanks Ray. I've learnt something today... I always assumed it would be added live by the station that fed the programme into the ITV network. You would think they would have enough to do when recording a studio drama in those days!
I imagine it would be done with some kind of electronic pattern generator and a simple wipe?

at Channel 4 in the early 1980s, we put on the cue dot in Presentation (or rather CATS did, the Computer Aided Transmission system) and we often had to put a note on the scratchpad that went round the network who were putting the ads in saying "Ignore old cue dot" due to their presence on old ITV shows like "Budgie" and "Upstairs, Downstair". I know that during a live LWT show, and I think it was a "Live from the Palladium" later on in the 1980s when they had the record for a cue dot - they were only supposed to be 2 mins but on this occasion it was on was 19 mins I think!

And how did it end up on something like Callan? Does that mean it's an off-air recording? The original DVD release of the first colour series caused some complaints as this was removed by digitally (?) zooming in on the shots that contained it.

On old television sets you would not have seen it anyway if it had been adjusted to certain parameters of the test card.

The X-Factor cue dots appear in both the right and left hand corners. Any ideas why they need two?
