I don't know if anyone here is aware of the new Kinks Dvd just being released , called Kinks Kollected 1964 - 1983 . It looks great just in time for xmas , it's a 20 - track Dvd spanning their entire career . Keith Badman lists some of the performences in record collector and are as follows:- You Really Got Me - The Beat Room Sunny Afternoon - [Courtesy of Belgium Tv's Vibrato] Lola - Totp Dead End Street - Promo Film Starstruck - Promo Film Apeman - Promo Film Death Of a Clown - Beat Club Susannah's Still Alive - Beat Club Autumn Almanac - Totp Wonder Boy - Totp Beat Beat Beat 1966 Performence Days - Pop Goes The 60s
Apparantly with great picture and sound quality throughout.

Hi Alan, I think this collection has been discussed recently here. Unfortunately I believe this release has been butchered, cropping all this footage to 16.9 which is a real downer on what would have been a must-have. If it is indeed 16.9 it most certainly is a must-not-have.

Thanks for the info Mike , i certainly won't be buying this now , what a shame and unusual for something that Keith Badman has reviewed and i wonder why all the footage is cropped to 16.9 , i can't understand why this is .

I guess because it's going for a "general" audience that are unable to accept something with a black border either side of the screen on their plasma TV! It's a shame people have such an idiotic attitude and won't accept something presented in it's correct way. I won't be buying either, for this reason.

The DVD is in 4:3 aspect ratio so not sure where this rumour of it being 16:9 has come from. If there's something to complain about it's that all the live material has been dubbed to a studio version of the song.

This compilation was released back in August, but only in the Netherlands. Amazon have it as an import but are incorrectly listing the aspect ratio as 1.33:1 Maybe it will get an official release over here in the correct ratio?

Sal, do you have the DVD? Can you confirm it is definately in the correct aspect ratio as I'm sure most of us will buy it if that is confirmed. Sorry to bring up the 16.9 rumour if it is indeed untrue.

We swap one issue for another though; I wonder why live material has been dubbed with records? I am guessing it's because there is no other visual representation for a particular song other than a live version.

Sorry to bring up the 16.9 rumour if it is indeed untrue. Yes I do have the DVD. It's 4:3 NTSC. The three songs from Beat Room and Beat, Beat, Beat have been dubbed to the studio version. There's some footage from Qoui De Neuf that I've never seen before. A few promo's including Sitting in the Midday Sun. There's no version of All Day and All of the Night which seems a bit strange. The TOTP footage is marked as coming from Vjoew - never heard of this programme.

Sorry for confusing the whole 4.3/16.9 rumour. Being a BR DVD I would expect them to release it in the correct aspect. I have found artwork to prove what Sal says. Looks like another for my christmas list.

Thanks for the track listing Mike i'll probably get it now but along with All day And All Of The Night i wish there were clips of See My Friends and Set Me Free , i would have prefered these rather than the last 3 songs , just a personel choice.

Not sure I agree.. the real rarity for Kinsk fans on this set is the full promo for "Sitting In The midday Sun", which hasn't turned up anywhere yet (Just a clip on Youtube)

Although there are some interesting clips used on this set, certain key songs are not represented for some reason (including the two you mention, Alan). I'll still buy but it could have contained more clips as the running time can't be that long. Interesting that it's NTSC though as I thought Europe was mainly PAL. If the TOTP clips of Almanac and Wonderboy reside in the Netherlands anyway, I wonder how they found their way on to NTSC, only to end up back again on a Dutch release!? A generation of downgrading that needn't have been.

It does remind me of a DVD version of the kind of Kinks hits CDs you get in all-night service stations.. tacky off the peg "sixties/seventies" font and all. Though I suppose it's good that's there's finally an official release of full performances of a majority of key songs, it's far from the Kids All Alright-style visual extravaganza that should and could be put together.
