According to BBC records this edition of TOTP resides in their archives yet apart from the Rod Stewart performance I haven't seen any of it. It would be great to see a different clip of Slade's "coz I luv you" and The Fortunes performing "freedom come, freedom go". Does anyone know anything about this show?

Not according to the BBC Motion Gallery.

That's very interesting Graham. The database would seem to indicate that this edition does indeed survive.

Gary, You mentioned that it was recovered by the BFI a while back - where was it recovered from ? Is it colour video tape or a black and white tele recording ? surely a major find as 71 has a very poor survival rate.

I must admit, I wasn't aware of this edition existing either. With Motion Gallery, maybe it could be the same as with the old Infax system, whereby if an item (such as a film insert) survived, the whole edition appeared itemised. Just a thought.
There were two TOTP editions from this period that Kal turned up on 1500 format in 2008 (18/11/71 and 2/12/71) but apart from those, this new development is news!

I'll ask the Beeb. I know my contact is very busy at the moment, so it may take time.

All that the BBC have is Rod Stewart (and the Faces) performing Maggie May - which was a copy made for ZDF, incidentally. The rest of the programme does not exist, unfortunately. The confusion stems from someone listing it as existing just because of the one clip.

And interestingly enough about the Maggie May clip, not only does the original insert survive but it also survives as part of the 27/12/71 and '10 years' 27/12/73 special.
Hardly anything for 1971, and one of the few remaining clips exists in three places!
