Just researching “Pop Quest”, the Yorkshire TV kids quiz show from the mid-1970’s, and stumbled across a complete edition on you tube, this was the grand final of the 2nd series broadcast 26th January 1977.... www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvy-LqOTrx8On the first series they had a star guest each week, I’m sure everybody is familiar with Marc Bolan’s appearance on the very first show, but Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks also turned up on one edition. There was also a “Pop Quest Special” on 2nd February 1977 in which the whole programme looked at how records were made, this was done to mark the centenary of recorded music.

It's not missing - but it's very nice to see it!

Great theme tune too.
They made a serious mess of the Beatles best selling single question, surprised Kid Jensen couldn’t work out that it was for Britain (not worldwide), but I was impressed by the depth of knowledge that the contestants had, particularly given they were all in their mid teens.
Sadly the Sparks episode seems to be one of the few that’s missing.

Looks like they’ve still got copies of the first round shows involving those teams, HTV were on when Lynsey De Paul was the special guest (they played a video clip of Sparks doing “Get in the Swing“ that day, as well as 10CC’s “I‘m Not in Love“), London were on the first show with Marc Bolan, a clip of that is on you tube here… www.youtube.com/watch?v=DozqR_cP37MI’m pretty sure I did catch at least a few editions of the first series at the time they went out, but I don’t remember seeing Sparks on it. I’d like to imagine that Ron just sat and stared menacingly into the camera whilst Russell answered all the questions.

Pop Quest taught me a very early life lesson : I auditioned for the first series (Steve Merike) aged 14, but didn't get on. I assumed initially that it was because I'd got a few of the questions wrong at the audition : but then when the series was shown, the Anglia TV team (my region) were absolutely awful, knew nothing about pop music beyond that week's chart, and got hammered. I could have trebled their team score just on my own! They were, however, all better looking than me ...

Well, I'm sure I got a few wrong in the audition, but I think they were more looking for people who had a bit of chat and would 'come over' on TV. Not that you wouldn't, Dale, just I doubt I got in for being 'good looking'...
That Sparks episode, they were both friendly and amusing, they talked about some ice-cream recipe book they were thinking of, and Steve Merike got a severe case of the giggles during ther interview segment.
I do have the show on C90 audio cassette, haven't played it since 1976 I'm sure...

All of the 'Pop Quest" eps exist. The Sparks episode- it was just a video for 'Get in The Swing'.?? I don't think they appeared in person? They did appear however on 'London Bridge' 04/01/75, presenter was Michael Wale and they indeed do some sort of cookery spot...

Um, what can I say? Yes! They definitely appeared in person! I know, I was there!
I still have the cassette taped of the telly!
A couple of years ago, my fellow pannelist Brian sent me a DVD of the episodes we were on. I have been massively conflicted about actually watching them, thinking that sometimes the past is the best place for things like this.
I was going to write back thanking Bri when I got them, but was going to say "I forgot ..." about various things about it after watching, but never did.
So, If Brian happens along here, I'd like to say thanks, and sorry for not writing back. But there were resons, sleeping dogs, etc.

I think he said it was just a C-90 audio tape, Ray! Sorry to get your hopes up - Sparks are a favourite of mine and anything potentially missing from them gets my antenna going! Would love to see their missing '72 OGWT appearance particularly.

I promise I will check, but I'm assuming that if these were available to Bri, they'd be noted someplace. More than likely the same place you are looking...

Mornin'
Right, I checked the disc, and the Sparks episode is not on it. It's Prog 1 (Marc Bolan), and the grand final (Alvin Stardust).
