Russ Ballard, ""Going back to Mike Read's Pop Quiz (and I missed the one that Bill was on due to being on holiday - pre-VCR era unfortunately), I actually attended the recording of the first ever programme (1981 I guess). Interesting to see how long it took for a half hour programme to be recorded - what with re-takes etc. I seem to remember a bit of a delay as Errol (Hot Chocolate) Brown's head had to be powdered as there was too much glare coming from it. If memory serves me correctly, other guests on that show were Alvin Stardust, Lynsey de Paul, Russ Ballard, Chas Hodges and someone else I can't recall. A veritable "who's who" of the music industry, I'm sure you'd agree. I was so inspired that 15 years later I bought the Pop Quiz board game (2nd hand of course). I know that MR is a subject of some derision in 'rock' circles, but I do suspect that he had a bit of a fondness for BBD - I recall hearing him play Maid in Heaven as late as 1990."" from a Bill Nelson fan site - could the other have been Bill Nelson?

Thanks for letting us know who the Russ B was, Ray! That show was actually broadcast as S01E05 - although they may have been recorded in a different order. The guests were:

On the last show of the 2nd series, Mike says Pop Quiz will be back in October for a Beatles Special, probably to mark the 20th anniversary of the Release of Love Me Do, anyone know if this show actually happenend, as its not in the list?

Yes, I had noticed there were two part 1's of different lengths so I had checked both when indexing S02E11.

I forgot to mention the promised Beatles Special which doesn't appear to have been broadcast. Was it even recorded, I wonder? Mark Tinkler, who worked on the 1994 series, remembers "getting a phone call from a rather pissed off Neil Aspinall". Perhaps Neil vetoed the idea of the 1983 special? Does anyone know the reason behind why it was never shown?

Just found a mention of Pop Quiz in Keith Badman and Barry Miles book, The Beatles Diary Volume 2: After The Break-Up 1970-2001

Under the heading October 1982 it says:

A scheduled special Beatles 20th anniversary of 'Love Me Do' edition of the BBC1 Mike Read series Pop Quiz is cancelled due to "technical difficulties".

The entry for Saturday, October 9 reads:

As part of a special 'Love Me Do' 20th anniversary feature, Paul's brother Mike McCartney appears as a special guest on the BBC1 Saturday morning children's show Saturday Superstore, hosted by the DJ Mike Read. During the interview, during which promotional film clips for 'Love Me Do' and Paul's 'Tug Of War' are transmitted, Mike McCartney reveals that he has a Beatles rehearsal tape, recorded at The Cavern back in 1962. While he is showing Read various Beatles artefacts, he accidentally drops a model of Paul, breaking off one of its hands.

Finally, for Tuesday, December 28:

Tonight's special Christmas edition of Pop Quiz, hosted by Mike Read and transmitted on BBC1 between 5:25 and 5:54pm, features the belated Beatles Pop Quiz section, postponed from October, and includes questions especially set by both Paul and Ringo.

So it appears it was reduced to just a small part of the the Christmas show in the end...
