Was the 19.1.69 show the one I recall where Garland failed to appear following the bands musical introduction? The conductor was forced to extend the overture into further movements as the audience began murmering worriedly; witnessing the curtains fall open to an empty stage. This went on for possibly as long as 10 minutes. I seem to recall then an announcer walking on to apologise, with the curtains closing. I can't recall if she arrived later on in the show or not. The press documented the incident the following day.

Yep. Reported in the Times of 20/1/69.

Three minutes according to the ATV spokesman quoted by the Times.

I seem to recall then an announcer walking on to apologise, with the curtains closing. I can't recall if she arrived later on in the show or not. The press documented the incident the following day.

She did indeed come on to do her act and at one point asked the conductor the words of the song she was singing.

I wonder if anyone knows if there was; as there was with some ITV company shows; a policy of taping the later live transmissions onto Ampex on transmission? This was sometimes done with shows (other series) for short term reference use.

Wouldn't it be more likely that for reference purposes they "might" have recorded on a domestic format like Shibaden et al, or the cost of 16mm TR which could then be skipped..?

Imagine a SNATLP turning up on a Shibaden reel !

(It happened with a "Howerd's Hour" from 1968, I feel I must add).

Quite right! this was done mainly for legal reasons as obviously anything could happen on a live show.
I would assume it would be recorded to Ampex or TR,
as for example a court room would more likely have a 16mm projector in those days than a semi domestic video like a Shibaden.

It would be interesting if anyone could confirm that SNATLP d id actually go out live or was perhaps an instant replay? IE recorded while the viewers were actually watching Danger Man or Sunset Strip. This would open up many possibilities of surviving tapes.

There is a case of video reel to reels I think Bob Monkhouse had someone tape them off air 1966 (ref: Missing believed wiped circa '94).

I've been told some 'Crossroads' were taped off air for ref. on Philips, but not sure if this was later than 1969.

Might be worth checking with Dick Fiddy or Steve Bryant (NFA) as I think theres next to nothing of 'Ratcatchers' existing.

It gradually lost popularity in various regions so those regions watched a recording later on in the evening. It was killed off in the summer of 1967. However brought back for a special featuring Shirley Bassey in the Christmas time of the same year turned out to be one of the highest rated shows of the year.

I've got a long listing for the Palladium show and it seems that after about summer 1967 it carried on intermittently, mixed in with other similar programmes on other weeks. It limped
forward randomly till about early 1969, when it finally disappeared.
