Would there be enough Kinks BBC footage to put togther a BBC4 compilation a la the recent Tom Jones one?
What could possibly be included if the effort was made to obtain copies of BBC footage and restore it?
What else is there: TOTP: Sunny Afternoon, Autumn Almanac, Wonderboy, Days, Lola, Apeman, Come Dancing Julie Felix: Picture Book, Last of the....
what else could be included?
I appreciate Sunny Afternoon isn't really "broadcast quality" as it stands

There's much more 70s material that 60s material.
From the 60s, there's also: Beat Room (YRGM, Got Love If You Want It) and A Whole Scene Going On (Sunny Afternoon) but not much else including the stuff you've mentioned.
Then from the 70s, you've got the 1972 and 1977 OGWT sessions, 1972 Kinks at the Rainbow docu, 1973 In Concert show, and the 1977 Christmas concert (originally an OGWT special)
And don't forget the 1994 TOTP You Really Got Me, plus the Steve Wright People show appearnace for same. (and the 1994 Children in Need ALL Day and all of the Night)

Enough there then for a very even-handed show

There's also You Really Got Me etc. from The Beat Room, although I don't think we'd get Autumn Almanac or Wonderboy as these don't reside at the BBC!

So you did! I was reading through in a hurry!
So here's the full potential line-up for '60s / '70s material (items in italics / brackets exist in broadcast quality but may not be accessible to the BBC):
You Really Got Me - The Beat Room (1964) Got Love If You Want It - The Beat Room (1964) Sunny Afternoon - A Whole Scene Going (1966) (Autumn Almanac - TOTP) (1967) (Wonderboy - TOTP) (1968) Last Of The Steam Powered Trains - Once More With Felix (1969) Picture Book - Once More With Felix (1969) Days - Pop Go The Sixties (1969) Lola - TOTP (1970) Apeman - TOTP (1971) Have A Cup Of Tea - OGWT (1972) Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues - OGWT (1972) The Kinks At The Rainbow (1972) The Kinks In Concert (1973) The Kinks Christmas Concert - OGWT (1977)
There's also the film for Dead End Street (1966) which, although not made by the BBC as such, was produced for inclusion in TOTP. Regardless of a BBC-4 compilation, i'd like to see that little lot released on DVD!

Interesting. I didn't know about any Shangri-la performances. Must be the only time they promoted this one! Another tragic loss.

Interesting. I didn't know about any Shangri-la performances. Must be the only time they promoted this one! Another tragic loss. All my info was taken from Doug Hinman's 2004 book All Day And All of the Night. I don't actually know for sure that the Sarstedt show (or most of the other non TOTP programmes) doesn't exist, just working on probability given contemporay survival rates, and the fact that they probably would've turned up by now if they still existed. Btw one show you missed in the rundown was the 1977 OGWT Kinks session: a different show from the 1977 Christmas concert, it featured the Kinks showcasing 6 tracks from their then-new (and imo, most boring) album Sleepwalker.

Thanks for the lists Laurence and AJ,the list of Kinks material that's missing is such a shame , there's more than i feared , personally i'd love to see the TOTP performence of Waterloo Sunset although we should be grateful that the beat club performence of this song survives. I suppose there is no chance of the Dee Time clip of this song being out there somewhere.

There's a 'Come Dancing' TOTP appearance from 1983 and I'm fairly sure the 'Top Of The Pops' chart countdown animation still exists.

Given what a fantastic clip the Autumn Almanac from TOTP is, someone needs to hand Richard Klein a copy pronto....

Now we will get a chance to see The Kinks At The BBC as it will be broadcast next week on BBC 4. A one hour show from 22.15 to 23.15 and repeated later.
