A plea for help. Actor/Director Martin Starkie, a very very dear friend of mine, sadly passed away towards the end of last year. Appearing in many TV productions of the 1950s - often as the villain - Martin was a stalwart of live TV. His many roles included Dixon of Dock Green (1961/2), Sherlock Holmes (The Red Headed League, 1951), Mysteries and Miracles (1965) and 5 episodes of the BBC Sunday Night Theatre (1950 - 1956). He also adapted Chaucers The Canterbury Tales for a 7 part series on the BBC. He later became a world famous theatrical director, taking his production of the musical The Canterbury tales all over the world. What I would like to know is do any episodes of The Canterbury Tales still exist in the archive - and if so in what format? Also, does any of his prior acting work (Dixon etc.) still exist? Rummaging through a box of old photographs, I came upon 1 John Cura telesnap of Martin playing Victor Spaulding in his Sherlock episode The Red Headed League - which I have attached to this thread. The reason I am posting this thread is that I & a few of his other very close friends are planning to do a suitable tribute to the work Martin did - both on TV and on stage. Finding out his full stage career, with photos etc. has been relatively easy, but uncovering information of his TV work has proved more difficult. As I have an interest in old TV, I have taken on the role of researcher for this side of Martins career. Any help in letting me know of the existence of any of his TV material, transmission dates etc. and I would be extremely grateful. Many many thanks in advance Attachments:

The Canterbury Tales does exist, albeit on black and white film. There is a colour insert tape for episode 5. Digging around for the other stuff. Paul

OK.
The last recorded appearence of Martin on the BBC was in TITCHMARSH'S TRAVELS:IN THE STEPS OF CHAUCER'S PILGRIMS TX:11/08/1991. Prior to that he was featured in DAYTIME LIVE - TX: 11/04/1990 where he discussed a cabaret version of Chaucer and performed a snippet. He also featured in the LATE NIGHT LINE-UP edition of 20/03/1968 in what I think is another Chaucer related work and he narrated CALYPSO FOR CONSTANTINE TX'd on 16/06/1966. The earliest record of his work on TV was TEN COMPOSERS:8:HECTOR BERLIOZ shown 07/03/1965 in which he and Geoffrey Palmer did all the readings.
These are all in the BBC archive.
