Greetings, does anyone know from which programme this 'Kathy Kirby - Secret Love' performance is sourced? Oddly this was not included on the DVD release of "Kathy Kirby: My Story by the Golden Girl of Pop". BBC Radio 2 played the single on Pick of the Pops a few years ago and it was in stereo, since then I have heard it on many different CDs and they are all mono versions and being from 1963 the original must of been a mono release, where would the BBC acquired a stereo copy from? www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pmk2G7sn_00Kathy Kirby (born October 20, 1940 with the name Kathleen O'Rourke) was a popular British singer of the 1960s. She was born in Ilford, Essex. Her phenomenal soprano voice became apparent early in life and she was thought to be good enough for opera. However she became a professional singer after meeting the bandleader, Ambrose at the Ilford Palais. She remained with Ambrose's band for three years and he remained her manager and mentor until his death in 1971. She adopted the look of a 'blonde bombshell', very like Marilyn Monroe. Her looks, lip-gloss and her powerful, pitch-perfect voice became her trademarks. She had a string of Top 20 hits between 1963 and 1965, the best known of which is probably Secret Love. A later hit ‘You're the One’ is a particularly good demonstration of her remarkable breath control. Kathy became one of the biggest stars of the mid-sixties, appearing in the Royal Command Variety Performance and two television series for the BBC. She represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1965 and came second with the song ‘I Belong’. Kathy Kirby's star faded in the late sixties: although she recorded 12 singles and an album between 1967 and 1973, none were hits. Ambrose's death was devastating for her. She had some personal problems in the 1970s including personal bankruptcy in 1977, which she paid off. During the late seventies, Kathy Kirby virtually retired from show business. She currently resides in London.

It's from 'Thank Your Lucky Stars'. As for the Stereo version, i've never heard it but i would assume that there would be a stereo master in the Decca vaults somewhere.

There are 5 or 6 full performances on the Kathy Kirby DVD however Secret Love unfortunately is not one of them. Looking at the post on Youtube I would date it from 1965/1966 because of the quality of the picture, it's very 'clean' black and white footage similar to the existing 1965/1966 Top of the Pops recordings which in my opinion look better than the 1967-1969 recordings that for some reason are grainier.

Nic on the dvd does she perform any of her other hits like Dance On? I'd love to see a performence of her singing the Adam Adamant Theme although there was probably never a visual performence of this song.

Do you have definite info that this is correct, Nic? I'm keen to know if this can be verified.

It's from a comilation of show clips from late 63/early 64 shown in Oz. Do you have any more info on this, Kev? Where does this compilation reside currently? Were the clips complete performances? I didn't know anything about any such programme being aired and perhaps Kal would like to look into this one?

Here's the info: An episode of the Australian version of this UK pop music program which originally ran in the UK from 1961 to 1966 but only in Australia from 1964-65. Each Australian episode was a combination of clips from the UK original series and one local Australian artist, with the original UK host (Brian Matthew) replaced by an Australian one (John Bailey). This episode features The Dave Clark Five, The Merseybeats, The Redcaps, Doug Sheldon, Kathy Kirby and Australian guests, The Cicadas. Duration: 00:25:00
