Thought some of you might be interested -- I've located a silent feature from the 1920s that was not known to exist. Also with it were two other silent features where apparently prints exist, but of unknown condition. These are original 1920s prints with the tinted sections. Will post more details soon.

I once found an old silent film cooking programme, the edits appear to have been done on a sewing machine or something like it.

That's great news. I hope you can get copies made. My experience with the one nitrate film that I had was that it turned to goo soon after being moved from the location where it had lain for 40 years perfectly OK.

The film that is completely lost is called "Painting the Town" from 1927. The second film is called "The Beautiful Cheat" from 1926. I've been told that there 'might' be a print at UCLA of this one. The last film is "The Love Gamble" from 1925 which has another existing print (but not as nice as this one ). All three are tinted originals from the 20s. They are all going to be archived (not sure I'm at liberty to say where).
To Robert - these are 16mm safety prints from the 20s.. Not Nitrate. To Lance - the prints are in amazingly good condition. Very little wear, and very few splices. They're actually tinted prints with the sections with different tints spliced together.

Had a similar find once. Middle reels of a silent drama and a complete silent comedy featuring elephants. Was going to get copies for my efforts, but sadly, never heard back from them.
On another note: when did the search for missing films (cinema) start? I'd imagine it was in the sixties, but that is just a guess. Could one say for example, "if they had looked at the history of cinema archiving they would have known not to wipe all those television episodes"?
A similar post is on another forum, but I have reworded it here, to avoid being mistaken for our resident copypaste artist.
