perhaps this thread should be renamed 'Africa no progress' as there doesnt appear to be any news of any progress on here The progress very well may not be an episode discovery. Rather, the progress being made here involves making progress on checking archives in Africa to see if something MIGHT be there. Progress on checking Africa at least holds the possibility of a recovery from an African archive, whereas not checking basically holds no such hope. We can't expect that recovery of lost footage would follow a particular timetable.

We can't expect that recovery of lost footage would follow a particular timetable. Douglas is spot on. If all we learn from this is that there is nothing in any African archive, then we will know once and for all. This is an ongoing process which is being conducted methodically. As soon as something can be reported about the state of these archives, it will be. Do keep checking back here regularly. Paul

Any chance of a brief update? I realise whatever's going on will be reported in full in the fullness of time but it would be nice to have even a vague progress report.
I seem to recall someone saying that some black and white Joe 90 prints had been found, for example.
Best of luck whatever you can/can't say...

I seem to recall someone saying that some black and white Joe 90 prints had been found, for example. Hi Anthony, yes the Joe 90 prints (a few of anyway) were all that was left from the 1960's in Zambia. There is some two inch VT of Thames wrestling, but apart from that there is very little other than more recent existing stuff. We are still collating material in Zambia and we should have a full report by the end of the year. Kenya is another location where we have exhausted all possibilities regarding archive TV material although we are still making a catalogue of the surviving recent material for FIAT. The only other country we can now cross off the list is Mauritius; via the Mauritius High Commissioner I've had direct contact with their archivist and I now know the fate of all of their archive TV material. Again, once everything has been collated I'll put together a detailed document. I'm sorry I can't say more. Regards, Paul

Could you confirm that there is no missing Dr Who, Out of the Unknown, Doomwatch, etc ?

Hi John,
I'm afraid there's nothing more to add. These countries don't have any of those titles and in the case of Mauritius, nothing at all. Other countries are being re-checked, notably Singapore. SBS and their National Archive has nothing whatsoever.

Even though it's not something that I'm majorly interested in, a recovery is a recovery, and thank you to Paul for finding the wrestling in Zambia!
Would it not be LWT rather than Thames though?
And how much was there? Any dates? Apologies to Dr Who fans for quickly hijacking the thread....

Hi Ray, We're trying to get together a complete list, but the major problem is the lack of playback facilities locally. All I can do is pass on the details such as they are to the relevant copyright holder. The material may not be missing either (and you may well be right that it's LWT but I don't have the detail). It's probably best if everyone waits for the complete list from all the signed off countries, as we're still working with the various broadcasters to fully catalogue the material. This is something we would like to achieve within the next 8 months or so. Cheers, Paul

Thanks Paul, I suppose it could be Thames if it were a fight recorded during the week; LWT of course had the weekend rights if it were shown live (which was the impression that was always given, at least!) since when did I become an expert on WRESTLING? (Ray goes and pulls his own ears and cries in a way that Mick McManus would and then tries to rip his own face off just like they used to try to do to Kendo Nagasaki's mask....) Um....honestly I never watched it....really.

Hi Paul!
I was just wondering, with quite a few archives definitely out of the running, which archives remain to be explored with British television and Doctor Who episodes in mind? I recall Uganda was proving difficult for obvious reasons. Do we have many potential hopes left of a recovery in Africa?

Do we have many potential hopes left of a recovery in Africa? Hi Greg, I know it's frustrating not having a full list of material, but there really isn't anything to say at the moment. We are in contact with all of the archives we want to be in contact with but that is a lot of archive and associated bureaucracy we are having to deal with. The best thing is to let us get on with it and await a final report. For obvious reasons I don't want to discuss ongoing discussions publicly. Regards, Paul

Are there any parts of the world that it has been felt been checked enough times to be as close as certain nothing is there.
