Does anybody know , how to get hold of a Motd database (like totp) and see which matches they still have in archives , and which they dont, i would imagine they will have Matches like Leeds thrashing of Southhampton in 1972, but probably not games that were less entertaining , know Uk gold showed some games in 90s but not seen any since
The very first MOTD, Was transmitted in 1964, think Liverpool/Leeds were on, not sure of other game, tho

The book "Match of the Day" by John Motson has a list of al lthe matches broadcast on the programme up until 1992. There are several errors in it but it's still the best source available. You ahould be ble to pick a copy second hand on Amazon quite easily. The first game broadcast was on 22nd August 1964 between Liverpool and Arsenal.

In a 'sports in the sixties' doco on BBC4 a few years ago, it was interesting to see that the first Jimmy Hill edition only seemed to survive on a (very battered) b/w t/r.
I suspect there are more raw match feed recordings in the archives than there are of the packaged programmes.

As late as season 1976/77 editions of Match of the Day were archived in black and white. As mentioned in another the goals were the pieces of footage kept in colour for future broadcasts. However BBC's recent Brian Clough documentary couldn't even find a colour clip of an Allan Clarke goal against Birmingham City from 1974. So expectations of the BBC following The Big Match DVD's have to be low.

Numerous episodes of Match of the Day from the sixties were shown on a Scandinavian sports channel a few years ago. As a result many of those episodes are in circulation on bootleg DVDs (with a whopping great on-screen logo, unfortunately).
For example, at least 18 episodes from 1964/65 were shown including the first six.

If you are British you can't watch the BBC archives your parents and grandparents paid for without buying a poor standard copy from overseas traders.
