Discovered on one of my youtube hunts some footage from a BBC documentary series (well, two episodes) from 1958. It's called Railway Roundabout. Apparantly, the footage - which looks very good - is preserved in the NRM. (National Railway Museum?) www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKGD6zndP8cwww.youtube.com/watch?v=HvcmgHu3Fys&feature=relatedWhile it's good to know these films still exist, they aren't in the BBC archive to my knowledge - although I could be wrong. A lot of things like this have been released on DVD, so apologies if these are more common than I think they are. Anyway, enjoy watching. ;D

Ian Allen SBS Video released "Railway Roundabout" VHS copies of 1958-1962, copyright was attributed to The National Railway Museum and P.B.Whitehouse & J. Adams. I have the 1962 edition in front of me now.
I wonder if this was an independent production by the two named and just shown by the BBC.

It's quite possible. I'm not expert on copyright issues AT ALL, but glad they exist. In a previous thread there was the mention of pre-1972 BBC works not being "copyright", as such. I am glad these are in an archive. The main point of my thread and question was just seeing if the BBC had them. I'm still guessing they don't but I am very aware that the NRM are good at preserving things and the fact these films have been released is excellent.

I have just seen that they are all available on DVD now. Beware - an interesting comment from a reviewer on Amazon of the complete box set release: "If you are looking for a good quality video of certain aspects of railways extracted from the programme, then no doubt you will enjoy this offering. However be aware that much (most) of the sound appears to be dubbed and the commentary is most certainly not the original of the time and has been recorded purposely for this production. To me, the appeal of the Railway Roundabout progamme has largely been lost and these videos brought back few memories. I would have liked to have seen at least the opening titles and some of what was actually broadcast as it was broadcast - but this is a compilation of filmed video content only and thus to me loses the unique place I was expecting it to hold over other historic railway DVDs on the market."
