Some more info on the Jean Genie progress. This is written by John Henshall:-
""First I went with Richard Turley, a producer from the BBC, to Westpoint Television, a company which specialises in playing and copying very old broadcast video tapes. It was an amazing spine-tingling experience when David Bowie performing 'The Jean Genie' live on 'Top of the Pops' in January 1973 came up on screen in superb broadcast quality. It was the first time the tape has been played for over 38 years. It is 'rarer than rare' to quote Ray Langstone, who heard me mention that I have the recording when I was on BBC Radio 2's 'Johnnie Walker's Sounds of the Seventies' a couple of months ago####. It seems that people have been searching for this recording, on which Bowie played live, for years without success. Until now! The BBC wiped their tape after the original broadcast and there is no other version. Why do I have it? Well I was a young cameraman at the time and used one of my Telefex Fisheye lenses on my camera. I'm even in shot myself! So I went down to VTR and asked them to make me a copy – on 2-inch broadcast videotape. No VHS in those days. The picture shows Richard Turley and David Dean transcribing the tape at Westpoint Television this week.""
There is a picture of John in the studios as mentioned. Before you ask - it doesn't have any still/pic of the performance on there.""
#### I am aware Mark Wardle, and then Laurence spotted the Sounds of the 70's piece before me!!!! Obviously I have spoken to John a fair bit on email, phone and social networking an awful lot, hence the mention of myself!

Just that section. As far as I know it's the broadcast take and has the slate before.
The BBC know. Trust me on that. At a high up level. All I can do I have done, and it's up to everyone else. Just be patient and cross your fingers!
Any other news, I can tell, I will, REALLY.

I believe his management in the US know. That's not something I was involved in.

This is superb news, one of the holy grails of missing TOTP. Hopefully due to the fact that it is broadcast quality the BBC will see fit to show the clip in its entirity; this would be a good excuse for a 70s Bowie night on BBC4 which would be most welcome.

I completely agree there John. You would shure think that may be the case? Would hope some sort of interview with the cameraman might be in order if that were the case for a BBC4 Bowie Special Broadcast. Fingers crossed big time there on that one.
Thank You Ray for the additional info on this truely historical TOTP Recovery! Sterling work here again in tracking the source, congratulations again!
Hoping as we all do, to soon be hearing- seeing this screened again, for the first time in over 30 years!
Cheers, Lance.

Really brilliant news, now why don't BBC4 come up with "The rare TOTP clips show" and unearth the clips that went to europe for the DISCO show and others stuck in the vault, we don't want Lola or Maggie Mae or Starman, we want APEMAN, ANGEL and JEAN GENIE and clips from the 1973 show hosted by Kenny Everett, Get the clips edited and lip synched and sorted, who agrees!!!!!

Well done with all your diligent work, Ray! It proves once again the value of individuals seeking out missing material.
I'm glad the BBC know about it and hope that they will retrieve a copy for the archive. Also, I wonder if it's too short notice for the clip to be unveiled at MBW?!?
