Thank you all very much indeed. Please don't worry any more about the ignorant people elsewhere.
Instead, stand by for the best Christmas present a true Bowie fan could hope for.
You guys will be the first to learn what this is, right here, as soon as I can say.
Please stand by ...

Can Hardly Wait For The News!!!! Thank you so very much for letting all of us know here in regards John. Know all the work, dedication, and efforts here are being appreciated by many.
I have just seen that Jean Jeanie had been added again on YT today. I commented that the clip should be removed on the site. And flagged the video on Youtube to the moderators, hoping they remove this soon there. As I completely feel your angst at this very immature and childish behavior by whoever did this at the MBW event.
Update: I just received a response message from the poster. Said read my comment, and the video has now been removed from YouTube!
Thank you so very much again John for sharing all this information here with us enthusiasts. And for the guest speaking appearance at the June Music Kaleidoscope 2012 event.
As know many are, am very interested to hear what is discovered in your collection of materials in the storage lockup!
Cheers, Lance.

Lance, Does that mean other people have copied the clip from the initial poster?
Thinking about Bowie on TOTP, didn't he record a performance in the 80's, could be 'Time will Crawl' which didn't get shown at the time because the single went down the charts the following week. I remember seeing a clip but did the Beeb ever broadcast the whole performance without any captions?

I believe I saw the whole thing (Time Will Crawl) on TOTP2. With captions, but

Previous reports that the newly discovered recording of David Bowie's fabulous live performance of 'The Jean Genie' on the BBC's 'Top of the Pops' on 4 January 1973 – the master tape of which had been wiped by the BBC – would be shown on BBC2's forthcoming 'Top of the Pops 2' on 21 December were confirmed to be nothing more than wishful thinking.
But when a report on the BBC website, 'David Bowie Top of the Pops footage found by cameraman' (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-16150178) attracted more than 100,000 hits in 48 hours, BBC executives decided to bring forward the re-transmission date from BBC4 in the New Year to – guess when? – 'Top of the Pops 2' on BBC2 on 21 December 2011 from 7.30–9.00pm!
"The wait is over," said John Henshall, the former BBC cameraman who has kept a broadcast quality copy of the recording safe in his archive since the day it was recorded, "We should all be grateful to Mark Cooper, the BBC's Creative Head of Music Entertainment, for making space in next week's programme. What a great Christmas treat for the millions of Bowie fans who have been waiting to see this iconic performance for almost 39 years!"

I am absoultely delighted by this, and -dare I say it - quite proud to have played a part in this. Thank you John, and also thanks to Mark Cooper too, also, who is also a great guy and very much on side. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Personally I wish everyone had waited for the 'Tales From Television Centre' programme . I would like to have seen the full performance on the red button with no nonsense from Steve Wright and in full. Now we'll no doubt get lots of annoying captions all over the screen, the beginning and end with talking all over it and possibly they'll even cut the song to fit their timing schedule. Rather a shame I think. Thankyou once again John though for saving this precious performance and hopefully one day we'll see a perfect version on our televisions.

It seems the penny might finally have dropped at the BBC that there is huge interest in seeing these historical clips. May I add my personal thanks to John Henshall for coming forward with his footage. It's much appreciated. Mark Haley

I'm pleased, of course, that the clip is getting a big unveiling sooner but I do hope that John Henshall's expressed wishes for the clip to be seen in full - and without captions and voiceovers - will be respected.

I have seen at least 4 uploads of the MBW showing including an audio ok only upload all posted by different uploaders all have been removed, the time will crawl TOTP was 1st shown on BBC2's epic look back at the 80's night on new years eve 89. It's great news for all of us who couldn't make it to the BFI showing that the Jean Genie will be tx'd on TOTP2 and that the BBC have finally taken an interest in "outside" recoveries rather than inhouse misplacements, all thanks to Sir John Henshall to whom we owe our deepest thanks for coming forward.

Question for John - did you have quite a lot of creative input into the camerawork on TOTP at that time? I've noticed some surviving performances from the 71-74 era (Won't Get Fooled Again, School's Out & Mama Weer All Crazee Now being 3 examples) are streets ahead of what was on European TV & on most 'promos' of the time in terms of effects & camera-work, to the point that these (mainly) lip synchs in what was a smallish BBC studio come across as being iconic & definitive

My guess is that this will act as promo for the 'recovered' programme, and the captions will too.
