Hi John Thanks for keeping us so wonderfully informed about your tapes etc, its nice to hear it from the horses mouth rather than 2nd hand as is so often the case. Re the one show, i hadn't get round to emailing them but I'm glad you did. I'm not surprised you didn't get a reply as i expect they get lots of requests and unless the details get through to some one who is interested in the subject i expect it will fall on deaf ears. However i still think there is a good chance that it could get on there if the right people are contacted. My experience with this sort of thing is its often better to speak to someone than rely on emails that are so easily deleted. Perhaps you can have a word with some of your TV contacts who might be able to speak to someone in the One Show office directly. How about Richard Marson? It would probably make a good feature to tie in with the broadcast of "Tales of Television Centre" I'm sure Chris Evans would like this story if he was told the full details

I 'tweeted' Chris Evans a link to this discussion, so there is chance it may be covered at some point I guess (these people & their schedules will be rammed solid at this time of year) Thanks to John from me too for this opportunity to see performances & footage thought lost forever - that both this & 'See Emily Play' have surfaced in the past 2 years after being top of so many virtual 'wish lists' shows that minor miracles do happen!

John, So glad my remark made your day, not as much as you made mine I bet! Really great to hear from you and the stories you kindly share. I'm pretty interested in the photography angle too as I was a photographer back in the 80's, our paths might have crossed actually as I did the stills on the first two Sigue Sigue Sputnik promos, one of which I see on your site. I must dig out my old pictures and see if I can spot you on any of them! Great to hear 'The Jean Genie' will be available via the red button. Despite what I flippantly said, I'm MORE than happy with one take of Bowie. I know everyone is talking about what else you have in your archive but I'm more keen to know if you have more Top Of The Pops from this period. I would so love you to have any Mott the Hoople, Sweet, Hello, Kenny (not 'The Bump' ones), Marc Bolan or Chicory Tip from Top Of The Pops. I'll be at the BFI tomorrow and will say hello if I get the chance. Thanks once again and any more stories are most welcome.

Hi John. No, I didn't hear anything back from Mark Radcliffe and I don't think he read it out on his show. Shame as he is a big Bowie fan and also does the voiceover for TOTP2 these days of course.

Hello John, in the words of the late, great Sir Jimmy Savile "a thousand thanks" for allowing us the opportunity to see this in the near future. For me, 1973 was the best year for TOTP and for you to have some footage which was feared lost is brilliant. A big thank you also to everyone else involved.

I can't believe I've just seen 'The Jean Genie' on Top Of The Pops in it's full glory TWICE! This really is the classic Bowie footage we all remember it to be, any Mick Ronson fans will be in seventh heaven as he really shines in this footage. God, I wish i could watch it again and again. The live version is totally unique and it's amazing to think this missed out on Number 1, but 'Blockbuster' was pretty special at this time too. John Henshall's fisheye lenses gave a great perspective to TOTP, the camera looked like it was right in front of Bowie's nose but giving us a great stage view from head to toe in all his glam rock glory. Just before Bowie we were also treated to another ultra-rare TOTP performance, Hermans Hermits in full colour singing 'Years May Come Years May Go'. Kind of surprised me how many folk were laughing at the audience members dancing because they looked so cool and glamourous to me, well in a 70's way of course. But it's far from laughable, it was wonderful to see. Great to meet a few folk from this board especially Simon who started the Pop Quiz thread from my suggestion when we were still searching for a short clip of 'The Jean Genie', now we've been lucky enough and seen the full performance. Once again, thanks John for providing such a rare, unique and memorable Top Of The Pops moment to re-live one more time. It was every bit as wonderful as I thought it was going to be. Now can we have it on DVD please!

I've been keeping quiet on this issue hoping it wouldn't cloud any repeat screening, but 'The Jean Genie' was cut from the 'Ziggy Stardust' motion picture for reasons unbeknown to me. One rumoured reason was because Jeff Beck guested and hated his flares as ridiculous as that sounds.... Oops! Seems unlikely after all this time but I've deleted my original post just in case! The performance was shown in full on TOTP originally though?

Playing it live and in the context of a tv show isn't the same as putting it on a commercial film or record for distribution. I don't think there's any need for concern :-)

I went along as well last night but didn't get the chance to thank John personally but it was great to hear him reminisce about his time at the BBC. It's a pity we didn't hear from him more as he was more interesting than some of the clips shown last night. It may be an age thing but some music doesn't stand the test of time well. I'm sure John made Dick Fiddy sweat about running over time. As well as looking great, the sound to the Bowie clip also sounds excellent. It isn't as bad as the youtube post. It is in mono but it's pretty clear to hear everyone. There's plenty of shots of all of the band and you can't miss John in the background. It definitely was the highlight of last nights show and will be worth seeing when broadcast next year.

Just to add my own comments to everyone else's that the Bowie clip looked fantastic - pristine VT and razor sharp sound. An important TOTP find as it's what would nowadays be called an iconic performance; John Henshall is amazed that this performance (and other TOTP editions) had not been kept by the BBC themselves and very modest about how he'd managed to save it by default!
I hope we do get a chance to view the clip in full again sometime soon (and - to echo John's own expressed wishes on the matter - in correct aspect ratio, minus potted biography captions or inane voiceovers).
Thanks again John.

Hi guys,
I am back at work today, and I am as disappointed as you can imagine I didn't make MBW, but I am delighted the Jean Genie was shown, and delighted that John was there and is getting the credit he deserves as a pioneer of camera techniques and for his work generally.
I am obviously running behind on emails and messages and the like because of illness, so if I haven't responded to anyone on the Forum, I will soon.

Glad you're back, Ray! You were mentioned yesterday many times (very favourably) in all the chatting. It was down to your persistence that the Bowie clip came back to us.
