Ah now Glamourpuss ! I couldn't find anything about them online (something I do when watching TOTP every week).

It was the awful Glamourpuss record that made me cringe. That was easily the highlight of the show as far as I'm concerned, and I mean it seriously. The ladies were what one would call nowadays, err, trash, but in the best sense of the word, a guilty pleasure by all means. Granted, the song wasn't the best I ever heard, but the performance was one of a kind. Although I'm not too surprised this did not become a hit (yes bad taste was all over the place in 1976), it's a real shame there's nothing to be found about this charming quintet on the web.

I recognised the blonde on the far left. The west end actress Stephanie Lawrence who died about 10 years ago from alcohol abuse. But no mention of this band when you check any obituary (only her name listed on a youtube comment.) The rest of the members? Who knows. Looking forward to tomorrow's show. I've had a strange fascination for 5000 Volts since I first encountered them on UK Gold 20 years back. It is almost like the ultimate guilty pleasure tune. Does anyone know anything about them? Especially the lead singer (who the wife is convinced was wearing a dodgy blonde wig.) Pretty sure i've seen her singing or acting in other shows.

According to Wikipedia (and other sources), Tina Charles sang the vocals on their hits, but actress Luan Peters fronted the band on their 1975 TOTP appearance. She's an actress better known for appearing in several Hammer Horror films during the 70s... and yes, it does look like she's borrowed Jimmy's hairpiece for this performance: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrSReUAB8rQ

Tina Charles did not sing on all of 5000 Volts hits, but on "I'm On Fire". She didn't appear on TOTP though (for contractual reasons?); instead Luan Peters took her place (and even sang!). Later Tina left 5000 Volts for a solo career and Linda Kelly came in. She is the one performing "Doctor Kiss Kiss" on TOTP (4 times!).

Three different lead singers within the space of 12 months? Very confusing!!!

Interesting to note that 5000 Volts with Linda Kelly on vocals performed 'Dr. Kiss Kiss' 4 DIFFERENT times in the TOTP studio...8/7/76, 22/7/76, 5/8/76 and 19/8/76 which must've been a record?! Think the best and most amusing appearance (watch the bassist) is 19/8/76 by which time the track had stalled at No. 8 - wonder why songs that went higher than this in the charts were sometimes featured (studio or otherwise without being repeated) fewer times on the show?! Anyway just wondered of anyone can confirm whether or not 22/7/76 is scheduled to shown tonight on BBC4 or is it next week?!
Thanks

Very strange. Why would they want to start altering the show 35 years on?
They've already butchered some of the episodes by removing performances. Now they've decided to "modernize" the chart rundown by using video effects that weren't available back then. I'm surprised they didn't remove J.K.'s name or photo in their 2011 edit...
Perhaps someone noticed that the captions and slides are sometimes a couple of frames out but then that's how they are on every episode - there's no need to correct them now - and we certainly don't want modern FX added during the process!

It looks like someone noticed that the titles weren't 'Title Safe' for example on the cut show the title '100 ton and a Feather' -on my TV you couldn't see the last letter of 'Feather' so they have corrected that by shrinking the picture and blurring the background, and presumably then corrected the dodgy frames at the same time.
But its strange they would bother to do this on only one version of the show, and the uncut one at that - and anyway, its nice to see it as broadcast originally.

I've been lurking here sometime - great site. Re the zealousness in respect of the titles being 'title safe' when the other week the first time they featured The Tavares they were credited as 'Taveres' on the chart run-down. Surprised they didn't correct that too on the re-runs;-
But to sum up the half-arsed nature of TOTP in 1976 (so different from the hip vaguely cutting-edge show of 1969-72 (and I should think earlier but I haven't seen any myself) how about the complete apathy involved in their not even managing to track down a picture of the Shangri-las in all their weeks on the chart!
1976 to me is a great year for music but unfortunately for TOTP the charts are full of American soul/disco acts which they couldn't afford/be bothered to bring over and that while being great musically was always going to undermine the shows.

It's totally unnecessary to make the captions on an old 4:3 production "title safe" these days as the majority of viewers are watching on widescreen TVs or digital displays where any overscan is negligible. Both '100 Ton and a Feather' and 'Sensational Alex Harvey Band' had been in the charts for over a month and none of the previous rundowns had been corrected which makes last weeks edits all the more bizarre. Not only did they not bother tracking down a picture of the Shangri-Las but they couldn't even be bothered to spell their name correctly either, referring to them as "Shangrilas" each week! Also, that Status Quo pic they keep using with half of Rick Parfitt's head missing is most irritating... I suppose we should be grateful for any TOTP. I just wish they'd make the complete archive available online so that we can download the episodes we want. I would happily pay 99p a show if they were available unedited in DVD quality.
