I have it on good authority than an audio reel-to-reel of the TOTP performance of Noone with Bowie on piano has been found. If I can post the audio (working on this!!!!), I will. The earth is a BEAST!

I distinctly remember seeing Noone do this with I assume Bowie on piano (a guy with long hair anyway which would have been right - I wasn't a fan until Ziggy) which I think was on TOTP although it might have been an ITV show.
Not sure the audio will tell us much as Bowie was never much of a musician in terms of playing but it'll be good to hear it.

That's an interesting find, Ray. I can also remember seeing Noone promote this song on a couple of programmes at the time, probably minus Bowie though. One was a children's teatime show (presumably Lift Off) and the other might have been Mike Yarwood, off all things. Anyway, a nice little discovery.

Peter Noone was a regular on Look-Milke Yarwood in 1971

Yep, that's probably it then! At that time I hadn't heard of Bowie though and had no idea whose song it was.

Yes, strangely enough, although I remember a lot of the hits of '69 from the time and the moon landings etc. very well, Space Oddity passed me by for some reason! The first thing I remember hearing and knowing it was Bowie being Jean Jeanie on TOTP in '72 (as featured in one of the missing editions, in fact). Associated to this, I also recall Leslie Crowther doing an impression of Bowie at this time dressed as Ziggy with the glitter and platform boots etc. Anyone know what show this would have been?

I remember Peter Noone changed the lyric on his release of David Bowie's 'Oh You Pretty Thing' from the "The world is a bitch and we've finished our news" to The world is at peace and we've finished our news" which I thought was silly even in 1971.

Good news and bad news. I've heard the extract of audio (there's around one minute) from an old reel-to-reel. The poster - who owns the tape, and it's NOT a youtube posting, I might add - has a copying restriction, so it only can be heard by certain people. It certainly sounds like Peter Noone.
In the poster's own words:-
""....going through the old family reel to reel tapes. I found over a minute of missing Top of The Pops audio from 1971. Peter Noone singing Oh You Pretty Things, with David Bowie backing him up in the studio on piano. Tony Blackburn is briefly heard at the end saying "also in Peter's group there you probably noticed..." before cutting off. Then a brief extract of the band Medicine Head singing the last few notes of "Pictures in the sky", who followed Noone.

I'm the person that put it up. The recording up there is from me putting a microphone next to reel to reel tape about ten years ago. I'm getting my hands on a reel to reel tape machine within the next week, so hopefully I can refind the original tape (though that was a microphone held up to a TV).

The earth is a BEAST! Do seem to remember peter doing it on something possibly 'Golden Shot'. As matter of interest I believe one of the existing 'David Nixons Magic Box' shows from the period is from the 'pretty things' hit time. And it features Peter Noone..

In all probability I would have watched that edition of TOTP at the time as I very clearly recall seeing John Kongos doing He's Gonna Step On You Again. I also have vague memories of Pretty Thing and Hey Willy being on.

I can distinctly remember him singing it on a midweek evening programme which was definitely not TOTP - presumably this was the Yarwood Show (Friday night?). He did a little dance, or rather a rhythmic sway, as he sang the chorus.
Charles Shaar Murray memorably remarked that this cover was the greatest example ever of a singer having absolutely NO empathy with what he was singing !
