Hi there,
I am new to missingepisodes.com (which incidentally I would like to say is a fantastic website!) and thought I'd introduce myself with a query regarding a full episode of '2Gs and The Pop People' (London Weekend TV) which my Dad owns on VHS tape and which was recorded/broadcast on 28/6/72. My Dad was friends and subsequently in another band with one of the members of one of the bands on the show (Offspring) who also worked for LW at the time and has since given a copy of the tape to my Dad. Basically I just wondered if anyone on the forum could confirm or shed further light with their knowledge whether or not this episode of the show is thought of as rare/desireable/missing believed wiped?! I have watched the full show and am aware that 2 or 3 of the performances currently exist on youtube but not the whole show. It starts with the blackboard/countdown for 28/6/72 followed by the opening credits/ dance routine and then ELO (10548 Overture), The Move (California Man), Tony Brandon, Offspring and 2 tracks by Labi Siffre among other performances which off hand I'm trying to remember. If this whole episode is considered rare/missing believed wiped then my Dad would be more than happy to make it available so I wondered if anyone had any thoughts?!
Aside from this I nevertheless wanted to register on the site due to the fact I'm truly fascinated with the subject of (and the search for) missing Top of the Pops episodes (mostly between 1970 and 1977) and other music shows of the time - and of course as saddened as I'm sure all of you are as to how much was wiped then - long live the search!
Best regards,
Chris Bird

Hi, welcome to the forum, and I hope you join permanently, it's great! I think you mean this one:- ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/title/644727Broadcast 08/07/2010. I don't think it's missing, but if your dad has this tape, or any others, maybe he would like to get in touch with Kaleidoscope, who restore and preserve tapes. Depending on when he got it, it might even have outtakes on it that the broadcaster subsequently erased. These things DO occasionally occur.

Does anyone have any info/memories of this show? I lived on the Isle Of Wight and can never remember seeing it, was it only on LWT? Anyway, I've been digging around regarding 2Gs and have watched one episode which is really fantastic featuring both Scott Walker and Sandie Shaw along with Heads Hands & Feet featuring a younger Chas from Chas & Dave. I also have a performance of 'Take Me Bak Ome' by Slade which was released on their Best Of DVD from another edition of 2G's. But I also have two performances by Gilbert O'Sullivan (Matrimony) & Richard Harris (My Boy) that were released on BR DVDs but are credited as being from 'Top Twenty Special'. But both tracks include the Second Generation and the same stage set and look identical to 2G's & The Pop People? Did 2G's and The Pop People become Top Twenty Special? Does anyone know how many of these survive and who is on them? All I can find on the BFI is this ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/series/27420Would love to know more about this series...

I have that entire '"2G's And The Pop People' episode in perfect quality for a few years now. I think it's been doing the rounds for a while but very much amongst specific collectors. I've always liked 'The Offspring' performance but it is heavilly desireable to ELO/MOVE collectors because they perform as The Move then within hours/days Roy Wood left and Jeff ended up performing '10538 Overture' with ELO on his own vocally and does Roy Wood's parts through gritted teeth!! ALL ON THE SAME SHOW!! Great stuff....

I was sure someone would have thought to check lostshows.com?
Here is what was returned as the search results :
This programme, which exists complete, matched your search.
2 G'S AND THE POP PEOPLE (1972)
These episodes may be important still as Ray quite correctly states. These may contain out-takes, later wiped by thier perspective broadcasters. Especially seeing as these appear to be created for your father Chris. I would recommend as Ray stated here to get in touch with Christopher Perry and the team at Kaleidoscope, as am sure will be willing to assist you here.
Welcome to the forum Chris!! Hoping as Ray does that you decide to become a member here, sounding like will be right at home here. Seeing your interest in classic TV material.
I have seen all the materials you mentioned Mike. Have been doing the rounds online for some time. The SLADE performance was most definitely my favorite. Loved how LWT had a lady mascot for each member, and with matching gear no less, fab stuff man. I have wondered this myself as well Mike. This is nice here, as is the first chance I have had to discuss this with anyone. I just did a search as well on lostshows.com for " Top Twenty Special ", and came up with this result:
This programme, which exists complete, matched your search.
TOP TWENTY SPECIAL (1971)
It appears that " Top Twenty Special " was the precursor to " 2G's and The Pop People". As discovered that Twenty was broadcast in 1971, and 2G's in 1972. This would seem to be why there appears to be a similar look- appearance between these two perspective series. Sadly, I was not able to find any specific performance data on either of these series ( minus the BFI listing already mentioned previously in regards ). Hoping someone with further in-depth information may possibly be able to comment here on that one?
Hoping this has been of some assistance here!
Cheers, Lance.

The top twenty special was a one off.
A shame as ITV could have done with a rival to totp!
I think the ITV companies got pissed off with the music unions in 66 and they were conscious of the 68 franchise chane.
Hence the demise of TYLS and RSG in part.

The Scott Walker one is a great one and has done the rounds for a good few years.

Watching 'The Talent Show Story' last night and up popped more clips of a chubby Neil Reid from 2G's & The Pop People. Is he on the Move/ELO edition too?

Great! I've had the Slade clips for decade, but I've never seen the full episode.

Couple of funny things in this episode. Firstly Slade's management, desperate to kill their previous 5 years of flop releases and relentless gigging, suddenly knock 5 or 6 years off all their ages. Dave Hill 20 in 1972?? 🤣 And at the end of the 'Sweet Charity' performance one of the dancing girls smacks her head off the set whilst reversing through a door. Carries on regardless of course.

That Youtube account has now been closed down. A shame but pretty much inevitable as it had a lot of BBC and ITV material, including a couple of editions of 'Pop Quest' as referred to on another thread and an edition of 'The Geordie Scene'.
