Does anything exist from any missing Doomwatch episodes (audio or visual)? I dont know of anything, apart from the reused clip from survival code at the beginning of you killed toby wren.

Nothing at all, I don't think. Although I swear I saw a clip from Friday's Child some years ago on Telly Addicts (I recognised it as I saw the episode originally). No one else seems to have seen it though so i'm not sure.

Oh, that is a disapointment. Seeing as it was made later than things like out of the unknown and sixties dr who, I would of thought that some off air material might of existed.

Sometimes the reason for clips existing is that they were used in another programme. As far as I know, Doomwatch was rarely referred to visually in anything else. For a series as popular as it was, it's also amazing there were no repeats at the time of any episodes. It just began, was very popular and then vanished. I feel so lucky I watched most of that first season when I had my one chance in 1970.

Yes, I wasn't being boastful there but just pointing out that such a small window existed to view the series. Sometimes it just isn't enough that a strong piece of drama is only shown once and then wiped. What WERE they thinking of?!?

Sometimes it just isn't enough that a strong piece of drama is only shown once and then wiped. What WERE they thinking of?!? I've often thought about why so few things were repeated at that time. Think of Dr Who, apart from the unscheduled repeat of An Unearthly Child the following Saturday I think the only b&w repeat was Evil of the Daleks. It's ironic that some programmes were probably shown more times abroad than in the UK ! The best reasons I can think of are: (1) there were far fewer channels that didn't broadcast for as many hours. Therefore it was easier to keep producing new material. (2) Possibly as a consequence of (1) there was a bit of a "stigma" regarding repeats. I recall complaints to the effect that people didn't think they were getting value for their licence fee because of "all the repeats".

(A new thread on the subject of repeats in the past has been started so as to avoid this one going off track) Over to you...

how come most of the out of the unknown plays were repeated? Well, 28 out of 49 is "most," but not by much. One of the Season 1 episodes, and six from Season 2 were repeated on BBC1, which will have been the only oportunity for those who couldn't receive BBC2 (i.e. the vast majority of the population!) to see the series.

Looking at Wikipedia, etc the survival rate seemed better than I expected. All of Season 2 exists and a fair amount of Season 1. Season 3 isn't well represented but Kid Pedler and Gerry Davis seem to have distanced themselves from that. However, I'm not sure what format the various episodes survive in. Some came back from Canada so are probably NTSC. Is there a definitive list anywhere ?
