Apologies for this guys, but this is the best place I could think of !
Is there any direct continuity from the film to the TV series & vice versa?
I was under the impression there wasn't, but how was Penny introduced to the TV series, because I don't remember seeing an episode showing it, but Hedges meets her (for the first time?) in the film though.
How come they changed 'Sharon' BTW ?

could she have been introduced in the follow up series 'the fenn st gang' ?
Television was pretty contemptious of actors in those days, characters actors would change without any explaination/storyline at all ! . One of the famous ones was when they used a another Dick with less girth, for Samantha's Darren, and nobody was suppose to notice.
The rumour was that Penny Spencer(playing Sharon) went all hippy and dropped completly out acting.

No, there wasn't any direct continuity between the series and film. Penny was introduced in the film, if I recall rightly, and then carried on on TV, assuming viewers had already seen the film!
They also changed Craven (and back again!) as well as Sharon; an annoying practice wherever it happens and I just wish they'd just introduce a new character rather than pretend it's the same one!

Wasn't keen on that 2nd Craven. He reminded me of Adam Faith, back in his 'Budgie' days ISTR.

I thought I half recalled a newspaper item around 71 - 72 alleging the original actor who played Craven qouted as living at Catford had died suddenly (and relatively young) which is why the part had to be recast, though the two portrayals seem to me to bear scant resemblance. Can anyone shed some light? 'Please sir' by then I recall, though not made for them, was popular with kids who tended to forget about these details easily & just get swept along with the stories.

The original Craven was Malcolm Mc Fee who died in 2001. I think he was probably replaced because he could no longer be passed off as a schoolboy.

Actually, Peter Cleall (spelling?) who played Duffy, was probably the least likely schoolboy ever. He looked at least 35. Mind you, the 'kids' in Grease would do well in any contest. If I remember correctly, Stockard Channing (Rizzo) was 37 when the film was made. I believe Aristotle coined the phrase "the willing suspension of disbelief", and it sure is needed sometimes....
