The FA Cup Final was done in colour from 1968 onwards, the two games that are in colour that I have found on You Tube were league games, which I always assumed that all league games up until 15th november 1969 would be in black and white. I just wonder why the goals from these games survive in colour.

It's certainly a bit odd. They were the reigning League champions, as you know, so my only guesses would have been either that it was 'experimental', or that they were shot in colour and broadcast in black and white. The latter would be my favourite here. The first BBC MOTD in colour was November '69, right? The Big Match went colour in the 69/70 season, I believe too, I think?
Nevertheless, I can't give you a definitive answer!
And a great pity that Saints 4-1 thrashing of Man U is only in b/w!!!!!!

I suspect the reason these are in colour is because the OB equipment was progressively upgraded to full colour for the changeover. OB's of course had to be capable of being used for any channel.
Also, live events were more likely to be in colour (and recorded in colour) because the equipment etc... was self contained. It's entirely possible that there are black and white recordings of other matches which were done using colour equipment, but if the signal coming back is colour, you may as well record it in colour if you have a free machine. Don't forget that Wimbledon was TX'd in colour from 1967 onwards although coverage was variable until 1969.

Just to add to Paul's point, colour officially started on UK TV on July 1st 1967 on BBC-2. Quite a bit of stuff was transmitted in colour there during this period including Wimbledon, the Mexico '68 Olympics, some Apollo 11 coverage plus many dramas, comedies and things like the arts magazines Late Night Line-Up and Release. People tend to forget this and think that colour began with BBC-1 and ITV going over on 15th November 1969 but it was solidly up and running by then. So BBC sporting material in colour over this period isn't that unusual.

I have discovered why the Manchester City v Stoke City game was in colour on March 29th 1969. According to homepage.ntlworld.com/carousel/ITV/oddsends.html it was that Match of the Day was switched to BBC2 that week, so that BBC1 could show the Eurovision Song Contest, which according to the offical site was on the same night. It's funny that even the BBC state that the first colour transmission of Match of the Day was on November 15th 1969, when the actual first colour transmission was a full year earlier between Chelsea and Manchester City on November 2nd 1968 and switched to BBC2 (no idea why this was switched, anyone know why?). Now does the goals exist in colour from that game, and from another game recorded in colour of Leeds United v Leicester City from April 19th 1969, which was not shown on the day, but may have been shown for BBC2's coverage of the FA Cup Final that year.

There was a fair few things transmitted in colour 67-69; much of this was on BBC2. Memory serves, the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour was shown in b/w 26/12/67 and colour (on BBC2) 6/1/68 (where it would have made slightly more sense!
I'm guessing early BBC colour transmissions were on BBC2, and this would have included some of the above. Obviously stuff like Late Night Line Up and Colour Me Pop were on BBC2.
I can't yet find out why that 1968 match was filmed or broadcast in colour!

Liverpool v West Ham was supposedly the first colour MOTD in November 1969. (MOTD the 60's video) I know there was a Man Utd v West Ham game from September 1969 (which was on a BBC '7 goal thrillers' video) and that was in colour.

No, the only punch up in that particular game was between two Leeds players (McQueen and Harvey). The Jordan/Corrigan spat was probably in the previous season's fifth round cup tie.

Correct the Jordan/Corrigan spat was in the 5th round in 77 the McQueen/Harvey punch up was in 3rd round in 78, 4 McQueen never played for Leeds again and went to the Dark side (Man utd) to win trophies as he put it, he won SFA ;D
