The Wilmer series is relatively obscure compared with the later Cushing series. Plus it's a region-locked DVD, as far as I know. I will probably get it, though I know little about the series and Wilmer has expressed his unhappiness over the production. Supposedly, he turned down a second series.

It might not be well remembered among the masses but it's often mentioned on archive tv sites. As for the region coding that can't be a problem for many people now can it? Cheap multiregion players have been around for almost as long as DVD. You're right about Wilmer turning down the second run because that's why they had to cast Cushing at the last minute.

Maybe I don't frequent enough archive TV sites on a regular basis, but I don't recall finding that much discussion of the Wilmer series despite my interest in it. Not everyone has gone multi-region. I know people - even film and TV buffs - who are region 2 (and region 0) only. More than once I've lent people discs they were unable to play. I will buy the Wilmer set, if only to see what they did with 'The Devil's Foot'. I don't know if the two incomplete episodes will be included as extras; probably not.

Maybe it's more on forums with members "of a certain age" where they keep mentioning it But you are right about the incomplete episodes, they're not using those even as extras. It is a cheap set though so I won't complain! Just a shame there isn't a UK set in native PAL.

I have four episodes of this and can't wait to see the rest. Wilmer was a marvellous Holmes. My one reservation is that 11 episodes will be crammed on to two discs, if the pre-order listings are to be believed. And if there are no extras, it is a missed opportunity. The incomplete episodes are sadly not set to be included.
