Hello
Quite enjoyed the election programme on BBC4 last night as seen by Panorama over the last 50 years.
Just wondered what the survival rate of this programme is like over the years, quite a lot of the clips appeared to be telerecorded ones, there was even a clip of Sportsnight with Coleman from Jan 1970 interviewing Ted Heath. It looked judging by the amount of colour fringing going on ,it would have been a candidate for colour recovery.
Cheers Jim

I know Party Political Broadcasts survive quite well - even there are ones knocking around from the first ones in the 1950's!
I believe the Beeb recently showed stuff from the 1979 election.
Panorama has a better survival rate than many shows do, current affairs was often a bigger priority than music or entertainment.

A year or two ago there was an evening looking back at the devaluation by Harold "pound in your pocket" Wilson in the late 60s. There seemed to be a lot of material available.

I believe the Beeb recently showed stuff from the 1979 election. Well, the footage at the very start from the 1935 Election - "a bobby paused by a conveniently open window and heard that the government was doing nicely!" - would probably have come from the 1970 Election, as they showed that footage to open the results programme.

The NFTVA holdings seem to have a selection of editions listed from the early days in the '50s onwards. Whether or not these are whole editions or parts (or insert features) is unclear. I would guess that a lot of editions are missing; as far as I know, the first colour edition from Nov 1969, for instance, is missing (although a few minutes seem to exist on the b/w t/r of an evening's continuity from 17/11/69).
I'd guess at least some editions exist as i've seen plenty of key clips featuring Richard Dimbleby in the studio from the '50s and '60s. I don't know at which point the series starts being complete (or reasonably so) in the archives though. Probably later in the '70s but this is a guess. I expect that with the early colour years though that it's the usual survival rate of only a handful of shows and masses of filmed inserts (?)
Can anybody enlighten us?

I certainly recall the BBC Parliament channel showing the 1964 election results programme over a bank holiday weekend a few years ago. While I don't normally trust Wikipedia as a reliable source, I don't see any reason for this list to be inaccurate en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Parliament
