Is it me or is the Dutch music show Toppop under rated on this forum? The show which began on 1st December 1970 and ended on the 4th April 1988 can boast one of the best music archives in Europe. The Toppop archive appears to be in good condition, although oddly from late March-September 1975 the tapes (according to the Toppop book from 1999) have been 'wiped.' There are no enties for T. Rex either, perhaps T. Rex were not popular in Holland? There are some survivors, there usually are, such as Abba in the studio performing SOS. The database seems very impressive with just about every significant artist/group making a studio appearance. And from what I can gather much of the footage is on 16mm tape, is this normal practice?

Do you mean 16mm FILM or do you mean videotape, Nic? The mm refers only to the gauge of film.

Why should it be under rated?
People only go by what they have seen or what they remember? Toppop was not shown in the UK and therefore most people in the UK havent a clue what was on it.
Paul Watkins and many others puts together pop show databases on this forum , I am sure if somebody could give them performance details of Toppop they would be happy to put them up?

Peter, i totally agree with that point. The problem is that very few people on this forum would have seen the original transmissions and the information of who was on toppop is not readily available. The database for toppop is no longer online and even when it was the only way of searching it was individual acts/songs. It would be nice to have a webpage on Toppop & hits a gogo to see what was on it and what's missing.
If anybody has that info, i'd be more than willing to create the listings for this forum.

I'm bemused by the title of this thread too! But if people are able to supply episode guides to some of these European pop shows, i'd be very pleased to see them posted here as little is known about some of them. If details were known, i'm sure they would be rated VERY highly! ;D

I have recommended to your attention a 188 p. useful guide-book, listing all the broadcast dates and running orders of all the music shows run in Dutch TVs (NCRV, AVRO, TROS, VARA, VPRO) from 1960-75, including 29 series for example Campus, Combo, Eddy Go Round Show, Fanclub, Fan Fan, Jam, Moef Ga Ga, Popzien, Toppop, Waauw, Session, Piknik, Tiener TV, and so on, 86 TV specials from different artists and groups + illustrated tons of exclusive colour and b/w photos and a DVD with a 75 minutes documentary and a Troggs, Marbles, Flaming Youth and Chicory Tip performance. The book cover referring these www.universalmusic.nlwww.brmusic.nlAnd this publication metioned here also dagelinks.nl/index.php/2009/11/02/popmuziek-op-tv/www.cdhal.nl/index.php?id=toon&item=DVD8829This book lists all the Toppop episodes in time order including the performers and songs performed between p. 73-112

The database is useful but the music selection on the DVD is drab compared to the 2 'Testament' DVD box sets. The obvious choice Marbles video would of been 'Only One Woman' & Troggs 'Wild Thing' or 'Love is all Around'. A Top of the Pops database in a book would be useful. ;D The Troggs - Anyway you want me The Marbles - The walls fell down Flaming Youth - Earthglow Chicory Tip- Son of my father

I'd agree that as a European show, nobody's really had a chance to see any of it in the UK. It certainly hasn't been as widely exposed as TOTP or Beat Club which even got late-night screenings as compilations on the ITV network back in 1987-88.
I think if you have any information about the show it would be a good idea to share it in an online resource. This would also encourage some television footage researchers to dig performances out of the collection for use in documentaries and compilation dvds. Although I believe the onus is really on the right's holder to do the donkey work and market their collection for such use, but anything you put online would go that little bit towards the further exposure of what is currently available.
It's a sad fact that since the advent of the internet, a whole generation of lazy researchers that have come up through the industry who believe that if it's not online, it probably doesn't exist.

The TOTP database in a book has been done by myself with Kaleidoscope, this book is out of print being currently updated and will be back on sale in the future, though there are a few copies changing hands for silly money. www.recordcollectormag.com/reviews/review-detail/688
