That makes good sense, I'll try tweaking it, and see how that looks. Thanks.
I think there is a bit more to it, though. Your suggestions handles the situation where something was in colour and now is in b/w. What about the situation where was something was on videotape and now is on film?
People returning video tapes other than on domestic formats is a comparative rarity, but we obviously want to encourage it where possible.
Obviously that could also be a colour / b/w situation, but doesn't have to be, there plenty of b/w telerecordings of b/w shows and a handful of colour telerecordings of colour shows.
Then you've got the additional situation where the existing holding is incomplete. Now it could be incomplete but on an appropriate format (e.g. what survives of Out of the Unknown "Little Black Bag"), or could be incomplete but on an inappropriate format. In this latter case you have something like Granada's "The Other Man" (film not tape, but both monochrome), the various partially surviving BBC Stanley Baxter shows (film not tape, and b/w not colour), or that Half Hour Story "George's Room" (film not tape, but both colour).
What do you think? Should the site only report format issues when the programme is complete and otherwise just report that only part of the programme survives? Or should it impart as much information about the current holding as it can?
Again, suggestions for wording, please, which you think are clearer than those currently being used.

Simon.
I'll stick my neck out and say if anybody does comment on Lost Episodes its meant to be passing and flippant and nobody is expecting you to rebuild the Titanic on what is a very valuable resource and we are very, very, lucky to have it.
As long as it can be updated when you find stuff I reckon the "originally made on-survives on" works very well.
We have to remember that until you guys came along in the 1990s and people like Tim Beddows (Network) went trekking over the country and Europe to find prints of Robinson Crusoe and Space Patrol the rest of us were living a false bliss that every we had ever watched was safely stored on a nice shelf with an index number awaiting for our future viewing.
So thank you very much

Thank you Peter, if Richard Down had lived he would have been very proud of what you just said.
Simon, the team and I try to emulate what he started on the internet.

That goes for us all too. Although I am a newcomer (relatively) to the missing tv forums, I appreciate all the dedication and time put in which it is easy to take for granted by us people casually surfing the net.
By the way Simon, regarding how to list formats. I have seen some of those Kal guides and just a simple system of keys / numbers as you have there to denote a format would be easiest at a glance and avoids too much repetition. Just write it as Laurence said above but add for example a symbol afterwards for something that is a domestic b and w recording. Put a simple table of keys on the home page that can be referred to and this would mean less work for you all ultimately too.

Indeed, I am now routinely adding factual and arts shows to the database so eventually Lost Shows will cover the genres we have neglected. You may have noticed that shows like the Morning Service and The South Bank Show are turning up.
Indeed, in truth we have so much data to input still we could do with a whole team lol, but the database is a tricky beast that only runs on some computers it's so complex.

You're doing a great job, Chris. We all appreciate it and Kal Lost Episodes is now my first port of call to look to see if a series exists or I want an episode listing. It may not be perfect (what is?) but it's a tremendous resource!

I'll stick my neck out and say if anybody does comment on Lost Episodes its meant to be passing and flippant and nobody is expecting you to rebuild the Titanic on what is a very valuable resource and we are very, very, lucky to have it. That's very nice to hear and I'm sure some criticism of the site is as you say. But equally, if someone can improve upon what we've already got, even if it's just the way we've phrased a few things, then we're quite happy to look at it. The number of ways in which an existing master holding might be deficient are quite varied as my second post hopefully illustrated, so we need to find the right balance between giving enough detail to make things clear and not encourage too many false enquiries, but equally not so much nitty-gritty as to make it unreadable. If there genuinely are parts of it which might be confusing, or at least not as clear as they could be, then the last thing we'd want to do is accidentally put off someone who think they have got some missing material. So we're happy to change anything we can, as long as it's for the better.
