An Evenings Diversion: An Elizabethan Evening
On Tuesday 17th November 1953 the BBC Television Service transmitted an entire evenings programmes in Tudor style to celebrate the end of Coronation year for Queen Elizabeth II and also the 380th anniversary of the Accession of Elizabeth I to the thrown.
The evening began with the usual edition of Television Newsreel, which was shown at 7.45pm. There then followed a special Elizabethan edition of the Newsreel. Its title sequence was of folk dancing round the maypole as the letters "Oyez! Oyez! What News? What News?" went round the maypole "mast".
"Elizabethan" news cameras covered all major events, and the first story was naturally a Royal occasion. There was also an item on someone getting dunked in the village pond for being a gossip!
As part of the evenings entertainments there were: Strolling players dance & sing in the courtyard of an inn. Society of Inventors, new inventions of Tudor times are examined. Philip Harben, who cooks a Tudor dish.
The following items were also part of the evenings entertainment, but sadly not present on this telerecording transfer: The honourable history of Friar Bacon & Friar Bungay, a Tudor play by Robert Green. Conceits for your pleasure Jeanne Heal intoduces J Laver who talks about fashion. Exchange of views a Tudor style press conference with Walter Raleigh sadly.
Sylvia Peters (in modern dress) introduces the Elizabethan evening, while other television presenters; Noelle Middleton, Jeanne Heal & Philip Harben appear during the programme.
