if, god forbid, the bbc archive burn't down is there any duplication of material, in other words how much would be lost, I know its unlikely but wouldn't it be best to have cheap vhs copies of everything(or as much as possible ) stored elsewhere, or even split the archive between 2 buildings

Over the past 10 years there has been a drive to copy most dramas at the BBC onto digital broadcast tapes and give the original 1" and 2" tapes to the B.F.I.
As far as I am aware, something similar is being done with other kinds of programmes, e.g. sport.
Often when the BFI have showings at the NFT (including 'Missing Believed Wiped') there are viewing copies of these shows are produced for the BFI.
Yours sincerely,

The archive is already split between two buildings, albeit on the same site. It may be that by the end of the decade it will be further split by moving the master copies of material to another site. There are already very stringent fire regulations in force at the archive, and the staff are well aware of the unique nature of the holdings (and before someone says 'that didn't stop the BBC wiping half their archive', please remember that happened, in the main, 30 years ago!), the archive is continually manned, and consequently it's unlikely to happen - not impossible, but as unlikely as the same happening to, say the National Archive (the former Public Record Offfice at Kew). The project over the last 10 or so year was not just to duplicate drama and sport onto digital formats, it was and is to duplicate all archived programmes on 1" and 2" - that is, material which has been selected for permanent retention. These days that means all drama, sitcom, variety, news and current affairs, documentaries, etc etc etc.

From conversations with people who have worked at Windmill Road, the biggest threat is not fire - it's flood!

Perhaps that;s why they are not bothered about fire then
