Discussed this over a few ales with my brother in law.
I remember one family were on for months.
The beeb got fed up and one week asked them incredibly difficult questions. The other side got easy ones. Noel Tidybeard also rushed the brainy ones into giving answers.
I remember someone wrote into points of view to complain.
can anyone fill the details in?

Can't remember much i'm afraid but I do recall they were called the Paynes. However i'm sure the BBC would have spelt it differently.

Anyone remember the spitting image sketch where there were four potatoes and they asked them to name one friend that they actually had?

Now that's interesting, because I thought that the Pain family (and I believe that was how it was spelt, not the more common way) were given easier questions and were probably kept on because of the amusement to be found in their surname.
After a while of thinking, "they're definitely getting easier questions," I actually started marking myself on their questions and those of their opponents. After all this time, I can't remember exactly how the scoring went, but I know there was only one week where I scored more from their opponents' questions than from the Pains'. I think there were a couple of weeks along the way where my own scores were tied, but I think in the end it was something like 5 weeks where I scored more on the Pains' questions, 2 weeks where it was a tie and 1 week where I got more on the opponents', which I thought was significant enough to suggest to that my theory had at least some merit even if not necessarily for the reason I came up with.

The Birmingham Evening Mail issues a telly reprint on Saturdays. It mentions a Christmas special from 85 I think. The Pains are called "formidable" so my memory must be right.

I think the Pain family won all but two shows from the first series of Telly Addicts. They arrived on the second week and were then victorious in all the standard editions they appeared in, but lost in the end of season Christmas special to a team comprising Michael Grade, Larry Grayson, Nina Myskow and Barry Took.
They also came back the following year to play a match against the season two champs, who I think were the Reynish family. The Pains lost that one too ISTR.

Weren't they as much a fixture as the Pains?
