Been going through all my old Sweet videos, and found a clip of Action, with Tony Blackburn introducing. I know Sweet performed Action twice on TOTP, the clip already on YouTube is from 24th July. This is the earlier appearance from 10th July, don't know if any of you guys have seen it before or not. www.youtube.com/watch?v=G59nm6O9nmE

Might it be from Andy Scott's collection? I recall reading he had a home video recorder and taped various performances though I'm sure this was discussed here before and what he had was listed... either that or my memory is fading. I do recall that Steve Priest also had various recordings but those got trashed thanks to a divorce! Argh!

It's from Brian Connolly's collection.

The question is did he have the complete show or just the one clip.

Are quite correct Phillip,This has been discussed in the past.In great detail on the "Rick Wakeman early VCR User" thread which was posted some time ago: missingepisodes.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=totp&action=display&thread=4126Here is the article scanned from a magazine which I recalled reading about Brian's N1500(which can also be seen in the presented photo) www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aV1iruQrWould be great to think that any further recordings he or any other members of The Sweet made might still be around. As seeing this material holds for good possibilities there, hopefully? Hope this is of some further assistance here. And a big thanks again philmoss for posting this thought to be lost performance by The Sweet! Cheers,Lance.

The tape "rolls" a lot.

This clip looks like its from a home video recording. out of interest how much better could this clip be made to look with restoration? i would imagine it would be easy to redub the sound but can the picture be improved very much?

I guess the easiest thing to do is wallpapering over the dodgy bits. This seems to quite a widespread technique with incomplete material. It's basically select a section of footage from elsewhere in th e clip say an audience shot and cut and paste it into the problem area!

Well you could use motion tracking/interpolation to remake the frames/fields which are blacked out. Secondly, I'd freeze/hold the chroma over frames where the colour is falling out. There's not much you could do about the general "sharpness" of it.

Interesting, would be interested to hear what could be done in regards to cleaning up this footage.I like the wallpapering technique, would hold very well with the crowd shots generally viewed. There is also the possibility (though do not think this would be a cheap process by any means) as was done with the Dad's Army episode and on the newly re-coloured Doctor Who: Planet Of The Daleks episode 3 by possibly using the "James Insell" Colour Recovery Method if the chroma information may be present in this recording that is.As is only a small bit of footage that is seen here to be affected.Could also borrow frames/material from surrounding frames to assist in filling in the tracking and rolling issues seen here. Was seen to be used to great effect on episode 4 of the Doctor Who story "Tomb Of The Cybermen",which was badly damaged, and required quite a lot of restoration work by borrowing footage from undamaged frames close by and overlaying over the damaged footage, the results were quite good must say there.Would hope this might be an somewhat inexpensive process possibly? Just a crazy random thought there on that subject. Definitely sounds as if there are other options left available here for some restoration work. In regards to the sharpness, could use some sort of filter, as seen here does assist in clearing up this footage somewhat.Should load in HD now for comparison: www.youtube.com/watch?v=G59nm6O9nmE&fmt=18Cheers,Lance.

sadly in its current condition i can see why the BBC doesn't chase after all the missing clips from TOTP. In this case it is far easier for them to reach for the other perfect clip of this song from another TOTP edition

surely the key here is to try to get back to source - e.g. the original Brian Connolly tape/s. I am asking around - someone out there will know his daughter or other connections?
