Hello Again, Saw some very interesting promo clips added to youtube of late. This material yields from the Australian TV broadcaster ABC.Obtained from a film source by the looks of the footage.Shows some very neat and rare Australian 70's TV Test Cards, and features footage from "The Rolf Harris Show","The Dean Martin Show", and interestingly a very brief ABC promo card for a 12/8/72 promo(44) of "Steptoe and Son".Part of a promo for Bert Newton. And lastly the beginning of a promo clip for "Dave Allen At Large"(as the clip segment terminates at that point): www.youtube.com/watch?v=veqKCJl0W1U&feature=channel_page&fmt=18Makes you wonder how much other UKTV material may exist In Australia in private collection. As Promo material of this nature might be a good way to see bits of footage from other shows?Just a thought there. Hope that everyone enjoyed the clip.Any further info here would be much appreciated as always. Cheers,Lance.

Ahh,Todd Emslie. I have talked to him in the past actually, though has been quite some time, did not know that was his youtube account?I did not see the homepage listed on the account page,my oversight there.Interesting indeed, thanks for the additional info there R Wels.I have sent him a message in regards to the possibilities of further uktv material being in existence as promo clips, such as these seen in the 1972 ABV2 Promo material.
Is a very nice chap, with loads of information on classic DX TV recordings, photos, and information on classic TV in Australia.
Hopefully some further material may exist in the ABC archives as promo footage? Just a crazy thought..
Cheers,Lance.

Better previews thatn nothing... There has been in the past a recovery I know of, 19 minutes of ABC preview from the 60s, with amongst other things Morecambe & Wise and Tommy Cooper.

This collection of ABC TV produced promos (from ABC studios in Sydney & Melbourne) was forwarded to the ABC sometime in the 1990s on a VHS tape & sat on a shelf until someone suggested a clip from the tape to me during 2006.
Having looked at the whole tape, I definitely thought it worth adding to the ABC Archives collection & had the item digitised/catalogued.
Aside from the clips mentioned, there is a specially produced promo for the 'Bernard Cribbens Show' that features BC walking down the street wearing a sandwichboard that reads 'Bernard Cribbens On ABC TV'
Several promos for the ABC TV music show 'Countdown' (circa 1974/early 1975), these are the earliest survivng Countdown clips that we have. I managed to have the 'Countdown' clips presented on the late night music clip prog 'Rage' as part of retro month in January this year.
The only surviving promo for the ABC drama/soap 'Certain Women' [in b&w] an interesting item as the clips used in the promo are the only existing anywhere (the videotape segs were wiped for the 1973/74 b&w seasons of CW - though the film inserts survive along with the colour series 1975/77). The series was apparently a modest success in the UK.
Bert Newton Show promo - interesting as it was a vehicle for Bert Newton (an Australian equivalent of, say, Bruce Forsythe or Regis Philbin), Bert still hosts high rating TV shows & appears in various stage musicals.
From the same tape, though not cut in with the other segs was x2 promos for an ABC TV special featuring the Everly Brothers performing live at Sydney's Capitol Theatre (called -wait for it- 'Hippies With Money'. This dates from 1971 & the program still exists in full.
You just never know what'll turn up sometimes.

The first Countdown promo I can recall was of an explosion in a quarry, to memory this preceded the show itself. Do you recognize this, does it exist? Martin?

Hello Martin,
The four Countdown related promos on this tape comprise of...
(1) A brief snippet from a promo featuring Suzi Quatro from what looks to be filmed during her appearance on the show during the first (wiped) series, 1974.
(2) An almost complete promo featuring quick cuts from various music clips with what sounds like an excerpt from a Linda George song (Linda George was an Australian singer who was one of the first semi-regular guests on the show during its first & second seasons), the clip ends with the Countdown sting & graphic. There is no mention of Countdown's new colour season to come in 1975, so it is likely that this is a 1974 promo (the general public in Australia could finally access colour in 1975).
(3 & 4) x 2 promos featuring (tv personality/singer) Denise Drysdale & band Skyhooks (both promos filmed during location shoots for clips to be shown on the first colour episode of Countdown), both clips feature references to the broadcast of Countdown in colour & date from 1975.
All clips are b&w.
I am interested in the explosion/quarry footage...do you recall seeing an episode from 1974 where the footage might have appeared? As no full episode of the first series of Countdown is known to exist, it could be a help in identifying footage from the series in future.

Sorry, it wasn't from an episode. I seem to recall it even preceded the show itself.
What I recall is an image of quarry while audible countdown is heard. Then there is an explosion, possibly blowing a shack to pieces. End with program details.
